Dark band across top of Toshiba tv

Hi all-had our 50 inch tv couple of years now but it has developed a dark band across the top third of the screen -this sometimes disappears and is replaced with a dark dot in the centre of the screen-as it looks like the dark panel is not completely broken is it worth taking the back off or buying a replacement board?-thanks
 
If it's intermittent like that then sounds like whatever controls the backlight is on the fritz. I don't know enough to diagnose but if you do manage it then a replacement part if available might be cost effective. I've replaced a few laptop screens for £30-40 rather than junking a working machine with broken display.

You could always try your luck for a partial refund, you'd have to either prove the fault was there from new or argue that a costly product should last longer, or just try it on and hope the retailer doesn't fight it. Where did you buy it?
