Damper replacement due to dust cover falling off?

Hi

I recently got a BMW oil service (was on its 2yr due date) and one of the comments back from the health check was that the O/S/R shock dust cover had fallen down and pulled the top off the damper. Surely the damper is a strongly sealed unit? They are suggesting £254 for a fitted new damper and the associated bits. It was bloody freezing when I got the car done so I've not been out to see if I can see anything myself but Im pretty sure I wont see anything without removing the wheels. My question is, should I be replacing the damper when I dont notice anything wrong with the ride?

They also say the aux drive belts are worn and need replacing...basically the will do the 2 jobs for £385 inc VAT.

Ive got an 03 plate 3.0 SE. It has had 2 rear springs replaced, last one a couple years back.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

No expert but on a car of that age I reckon you should be swapping the dampers in pairs, there will be a fair difference in performance between old and new. Dust cover story does sound plausible.
