I appreciate that people have a right to keep an animal as a pet, but others have a right to their own (in this case) expensive property, without the risk of it being damaged by a cat.

Absolutely... if you can't find a way for your cat to not damage other people's property then the answer is easy... don't have a cat. If it's cruel to keep a cat indoors, then again... don't have a cat.

As the owner of a Z4 and TWO cats that go outside, I can provide some advice.

I've had my Z4 since 2009, but only last year in late 2011 did one of the cats start lounging on the roof. So, each time he did that, I used my son's SuperSoaker water gun to douse the cat. Its best to do this so the cat sees what you intend to do. If you soak him by surprise while he is still on the roof, he may claw the cloth as he tries to get away in a panic. Hit the boot or trunk lid first, and proceed up the roof. But make sure you get him wet AFTER he is off the roof. And make sure the water in the gun is cold, for maximum persuasive power.

Cats are not dumb; they will soon learn after three or for soakings that the Z4's roof is strictly off limits. This is harmless to the little beasties, but quite effective. And I confess, a bit of fun for you!

By the way, if you are on reasonable terms with your neighbor, and he is a decent sort, you might want to give them advance notice of your plan so they will understand that you are not trying to harm their little critter, but are just trying to get him to stay off your very expensive roof.

Will a karcher pressure washer work as well?

If you did that to my cat, I would use my Karcher pressure washer on you. But seriously, even if the animal's owner is a jerk, there's no reason to harm the cat. Its just looking for a spot to hang out. The little guy has probably kept dozens of mice out of your house, so they're not all bad.

Sure, I was just kidding about the karcher. Really don't see the point in having a pet that you never see except to feed, but each to their own I guess.

For me it's just the hairs on the fabric roof that irritates most, the cat hasn't actually scratched the car... guess I might just have to get an e89 to sort that issue out, eh? ;)

Yup - I knew you were joking, hence the smilie in my reply!! I think the kid's toy water gun is a great solution here. It will keep the cat away from your car. And who wants a neighbor flipping out and calling the authorities and trying to get you charged with animal cruelty? Trust me - the water gun is harmless for the cat AND your car, plus its GREAT fun!

An E89? An excellent solution!! Let's both get one!!

Cheers!!

roaming versus house cats is a whole other debate though...

a cat who is allowed to roam (as they do in the wild) does not enjoy being cooped up everyday, they are after all creatures of habit and aren't always receptive to change...

Agreed on the first point. However most cats are domestic and our cat knows no different and seems very content. In fact he's asleep on my lap as I type this. We've had other cats who we have let out on the past, and paid the exhorbitant vet bills, when they've returned home injured after being in fights.
So now we've choosen to keep ours inside despite living close to farmland. Personal choice, I guess, and at least we get no complaints from our neighbours regarding them digging up their garden, or sitting on their cars.

agree if they know no different, they can be happy :D

maybe ours being two girls they tend to shy away from fights and have so far avoided big vet bills from such incidents... if only they learn to clean their teeth...

Funny enough when we meet with the breeder 10 or so years ago, she said you won't be letting it out will you? My wife said we always have and the breeder said all hers were indoor cats and were quite content so recommended we kept it indoors.

Why dont you try a cat sonic detterent.. yes it is serious, admits a sonic sound they hate, little stand alone unit, just put it by your car

I had the same problem in my back garden with the little bundles of fun doing their business on my lawn. I tried sonic cat scarers lion sh!te chilli powder everything, the only thing that worked was a PIR sprinkler. The water will work, I promise.

Cats arernt that clever - as htis video clearly shows lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIbkLjjlMV8

The guy has made a motion sensor hose pipe which sprays the cat with water. Funny thing is they dont learn and keep going back.

As for cat owners and what to do with cats and should they be on a lead - one word, YES! What gives that persons cat the right to come into my garden and leave their poo everywhere, to drop dead mice/birds etc on my path, to scratch my car and wreck my roof - need I go on? Its a pet, and as a pet the person who is the owner should take responsibility for it in the same way the owner of a dog would. Lets say my dog walks into your garden every day to do a big poo, climbs on your car and sits on your roof/bonnet etc leaving scratches, or starts chewing up your garden, in no time at all people would be at my door complaining - so what makes it acceptable for a cat to do it? Dogs like to be outside too, but we attach them to leads and clean up their mess after them, so why cant cat owners be as responsible?

Sorry for the rant but cats and their irresponsible owners really get up my nose, especially those who let their cats roam outside all day/night. There are a lot of responsible cat owners out there who keep their moggies inside, let them out when they can keep an eye on them etc. A neighbour near us has 4 cats, she allows them out only into her back garden, and has a high fence around her garden with rollers on top to stop the cats jumping out of her garden. Thats a responsible owner pet owner!!!!

Rant over!

Please check there is no traffic when you soak the critter. As a motorist and cat lover I have to say I dread injuring or killing somebodies much loved pet.

As for fouling other people's gardens, I see the complaint as being very fair. We provide clean litter indoor and out. I think it it is something every cat owner should do.

and for my fellow Z4 Forum member and Havana owner - Here is a picture of my havana, sadly now departed. I am very fond of my car but the cat was even better, he made me laugh most days.

Ah he could be the twin brother of my boy. We also had a Siamese Red Point who was his brother who sadly succumbed to CRF nearly a year ago.

Point to note to all those cat haters out there,
Cats by Law have the RIGHT to roam. Dogs don't because they can attack without provocation, a cat won't.
and what do we do about those irresponsible dog owners who will quite happily let they're precious little bundles of crap bark and bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark bark and bark and bark whilst you try to enjoy a morning coffee in your back garden.

Perhaps also worth considering before you decide to cause harm to the cat, you can face a fine of upto £20,000 or 6 months in the big house.

But if a cat is causing damage to your property and you have approached the owners and they do nothing then they can also be prosecuted as they have a duty of care not just for the cat but also for damage their animal causes to public or private property.

Remember a cat is an animal if you tell a cat not to do something it doesnt have a clue what your on about, KIDS on the other hand who insist on Kicking a ball as hard as they can in a cul-de-sac with no care as to who or what it hits should know better, complaining to their owners makes no difference because apparently "They're just kids playing mate, were you never a kid? (yeah I was and if I had done that my father would have given me a backside suntan) so in the same vein we do not expect irresponsible parents to keep they're brats on a lead and there is alot more of those little shites that should be on a lead than cats. Incidently my neighbour did not see the funny side when I kicked his kids ball as hard as I could off his nearside door but got my point.

In my last house, the neighbour came around (in his underwear) and started berating SWMBO that our cat was trespassing in their garden! He was getting quite abusive until 6ft 3 of me arrived from the living room (he thought I was at work) whereupon he mumbled something and buggered off.

Cat repellent, or a little citrus juice on the windows (I wouldn't suggest it on the roof fabric, it's acidic) might keep them away.

Hehe - problem with a noisy dog Steve? Did you say it barked?

For the OP - I can totally understand your anger at the little kitty's behaviour. You could always try a car cover, or one of the sonic kitty scaring devices...
