Damaged fender liner / rubbing

Previous owner of my 35is clearly had rubbing tyres as the outer parts of rear fender liners are damaged. Tyre has chewed a crack/hole in the outer upper part of it. How critical is this? Is it an issue if water and dirt get between liner and the fender or is it designed so it gets to dry out?

Also another question about modifying this liner: I have old wheels from 4 series that I tested on Z4. There is slight rub in the back (and thus took a closer look at the fender and noticed the damage). I read somewhere on the forum that people have modified these plastic liners to fix slight rubbing. How would one go about modifying it? Anyone done it?

To clarify, this is the part im talking about (also marked the damaged part there in red):

Thanks!

What wheels / tyres are you running ..they shouldn’t rub by default?

These rears are just couple millimeters too wide: 285/25 R20 on 10x20, ET 34. They sit flush but 285 is just a bit too much for this offset and 275/25 seems to be very rare size :?

As I have these already it would be nice to get these to work with small modification instead of completely new set of wheels + tyres (although 19" would be optimal..)

I of course have original ones that came with the car but I do not like the design and tyres need replacing anyway so thats why I'm looking for a new set.

Certainly on my 23i those rear wheel arch liners are like cardboard. They will tare really easy especially if wet. I applied a few coats of paint to stiffen and water proof them.
