Seriously considering a mk8 Golf R for my next car (or a GTi Clubsport). They are expensive but are they worth the money?Soaking up some sun
I could buy a Seat (Cupra) Leon for a lot less, which presumably is fundamentally the same car.

No you twonk....the Focus is the wife's.
It is actually a very, very good car. I would get another one (maybe an estate) but it would be nuts to have two cars the same.
My A4 goes back in September and I'm not going to lease again (said that before), so I will need a car.
Everything I look at is very expensive.
Short list so far is:
Hot golf of some description
Leon cupra (or modern equivalent)
Octavia VRS estate
Merc C300h estate (better value than equivalent BMs or Audis)
And then there are the 'left field' options:
Mustang GT V8
XKR or RS (facelift)
Hyundai Kona N
Kia Stinger GTS

Can’t comment on the seat as I know little about them, but having had many golfs, and moving from the 7R to the 8.5R, they’re a very competent piece of kit, and I’m loving it.
It just does everything well, and is far more capable than most of us .
And it’s quick, and just as fast in the wet

Had a B58 in a 440i. N55 too old (and too unreliable).@Pondy surely you’ll want a proper engine, silky 6 cylinder N55 or better B58.
Try an F2x M135 or M140.
Not really a fan of BMWs anymore (yet all the forums I frequent are BMW ones
). They are far too expensive for what you get. Super heavy, everything is a cost option and just not very entertaining IME.The 'ultimate driving machine' they definitely ain't IMO.
Even my Z3 is giving me grief lately and it's only just been finished.
They are badly built (cos they're US made) and rust. And Ford don't like warranty claims, apparently.
But I really do fancy one. Especially the facelift shape "Mach 1". Not cheap either.

I'd imagine they have the potential to make you smile more than any other affordable car though...

So the wife forced me to buy one of those SUV / Crossover things (I wanted an estate but of course that wasn't allowed, well she let me have the Z4 I suppose!).
We'd previously had a 2016 Honda HRV 1.6 diesel (£20 a year tax and 55-60mpg!), which was a wonderful car, but a rear end shunt wasn't repaired too well and although it had a wonderful short throw manual box, sitting in traffic at weekends (and my wife in the week to work), we knew we both wanted an auto.
We wanted something no more than 2/3 years old and approved used. Mercs were just way too expensive, BMW's we could afford (X1/X3) but the mileage and features were not great for the budget we had.
We both liked the Peugeot 3008 styling (second generation 2016-24) and doing my usual OCD research, I discovered there was a fairly rare dual motor hybrid version with 300bhp and 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, and our local dealer had one in stock. It was the then top specification GT model with special order paint and the weird option of a 3 pin plug in the back ticked. It was a September 2020 registered car, so one of the last made before the Covid chip shortage really started to bite and manufacturers cut back on features, so it had everything we wanted, but couldn't find on the BMW's (heated, massaging and memory seats, panoramic roof, power boot, top spec sound system etc). So we bought it.
I still think it's a good looking car, particularly the interior, which often gets comments from passengers. To drive, it's very quick in a straight line though it's some 300kg heavier than the petrol 3008 I believe and you do feel it. It'll do around 15-20 miles electric only in the depths of winter and 25-30 miles in the summer, so it easily covers most of our local journeys in electric only mode. When driving on electric, it defaults to the rear electric motor, so for most local journeys it's actually rear wheel drive. With very cheap overnight charging it suits us well. The upgraded Focal sound system is great and very loud!
Negatives - for the size of the car, the space in the back seats is not the greatest, the HRV was bigger despite being a smaller footprint car. The boot is a bit on the small size too. No automatic brake hold seems a bit of an omission on a car that is otherwise fully loaded. And the usual half a glovebox trick from Peugeot because they couldn't be bothered to move the fuses (or bonnet catch) for RHD cars is also annoying.
It's 5.5 years old now but I don't really see the point of replacing it to be honest. I'm not sure what a newer car would give me that I don't already have in terms of features, plus with a 6 month old now, she'll soon ruin it anyway with poop, puke, food etc, so I'm not sure I want anything nicer at this time!
