We've dropped down to one car (her 335xd) and my new 35is comes in September. As the Zed will be another April to October car I think we might need a little runabout, a £500 job if she is out and I need a car. If it comes to that, what do you get for that sort of cash these days?

My lack of agility / mobility these days means I can't fix or mend these days so it has to be reliable and I don't want frequent garage bills !

I was thinking Golf ?

I'll always recommend the Mazda3 as a cheap run around. Not one fault with mine in two years. You can pic a good 2004 car up for under 1k.

Take a peek.

It doesn't do cars any good being laid up for 6 months of the year. For the money you will burn on a cheap 3rd car you might as well tax and insure your 35is all year round and enjoy yourself. :driving:

We run a k11 micra to smoke around in, reliable as an anvil-had ours 4 years and spent £20 on a backbox

How many times a year will you need another car?
As others have said just keep your Z road legal for these times or use a taxi.
These options will probably be cheaper and less hassle than owning a cheap runaround car.
When buying the Z we thought about a cheap car for the winter when ice and snow was about but after thinking about how many times it would be used it was madness. Even buying a set of winter wheels and tyres didnt make sense.
We could either car share or taxi it for a few weeks which would work out a lot cheaper.
If you need the car and your Z was off the road could you not car share your 335?

I would say that this is the voice of reason!
We are putting winter rubber on her 335 so it'll be fine - I will make sure she knows where her bus pass is!

I don't see the point in owning nice cars then tooling around in a crap one. My days of cheap hatchbacks are behind me and I have no wish to resurrect them. Life's too short and the Z4 is hardly irreplaceable if something happens.
