Astra gte,mk 1 or 2?

Cav gsi was a great car

Had a Nova,
Astra,astra van,
Cavalier 2.0 8v mk3 (modified quite a bit in my ownership).

Loved those cars :driving:

Mk2 16v - loved that thing and the GSI was a great family car, able to transport the 5 of us with ease at reasonable pace and comfort

Seems to be a sad common denominator in this thread about dads.
But the first one I was aware of was the Datsun 100a coupe ( hmmmm , a link to my car now ?) It was tangerine orange and black plastic seats that removed childrens skin in the summer heat. We went from Berkshire on holiday to Falmouth. To see family for a week. The car played up and I sort of remember we saw an AA guy. We seemed to be overheating and he said just to keep driving it . Now I was only about 7 , so jaded with what was going on, but more mechanically capable at that age than the old man :D . When we got to his sisters home, he went out in his new Val Doonican jumper, to come back in the house , with what look cat puke down the front of him, as he took the rad cap off :? . Remember it being parked up in the garages area of where we lived for months , as then got a brand new company car. In deciding to sell it, he was clueless . No juice in the battery then involved about 15 neighbours, in turn, pushing it up the garage block trying to bump start it  . We then knew 'all' the neighbours.
Next was a brand new Volvo 343 DL in yellowy orange in colour. Any breath of power from power from the cranky Renault engine was immediately dissolved in the variomatic gearbox. It was cool, because it was new and that Volvo's to my parents meant we werent going to die in any kind of impact.
We moved on to a Fiat 131 Mirafiori in turd brown with orange and brown interior. It has a removable radio which was great for anti theft. Except the pins in the connector fell out, so stopped working. The paint fell of it, the battery and alternator packed up.
We then moved up a gear and got a second hand Peugeot 405 estate from a friend. It was big, it was brilliant. It was a normal metallic blue. We all loved that car. On a trip to our family in Cornwall, we managed to loose the complete exhaust when hurtling over Dartmoor . We arrived in a sleepy Falmouth suburban street , at my aunts waking most of her neighbours at close on midnight :? We had to er, quietly head out the next morning to the exhaust shop and wait for a replacement 'manifold' that had cracked .
Then lead to a new Volvo 245DL in old man beige. Did lots of miles in that one as a family. Was never happy unless you had your seatbelts on, as the first car to have sensors . Bought from Volvo Sweden and imported.
Last car he had was another Volvo and a 740 GL estate. Was a very wafty and we did lots of holidays and trips in that. Went to the Porsche factory as he used to organise as a travel agent , the trips. Bit odd, we were the only people to not appear in a Porsche. Had a blow out on the Autobahn at big speed and I was driving and thought we were going to roll it. We were late for the ferry, so quick change and we still made it with an hour to spare 8) . We were both extremely hung over , so lobbing money into motorway bins to lift the barriers was safer than going near a booth and sticking of booze :o
Sadly he passed aged just 44 years old. His history of cars was pretty woeful, but was an awesome dad. My love for cars didnt come from him. From talks with mum ( she is still with us at 77 now) I always wished I could have thrown him the keys to my Lotus/ TVR/ Zed and say 'take mum away for the weekend and enjoy' but sadly that was never meant to be.

So sorry to hear that. :(
Thoughts are with you today

My Dad also had a 1.3 Opel Kadette we were convinced it had the wrong engine in it as a bit like your Ascona it went like stink :)

Thankyou for your thoughts.

Yeah, wonder if the Opel branded ones a=had a tweaked engine, cant see it myself but the Ascona was quick in the day :D

I actually had a dad car flashback on episode 2, not a £350k one though

One of the stand out cars my dad had was an red Alfa looked just like this although I was only about 10 years old, it could've been the twin headlight version, not sure.

He never even added the bumpers which looking back was a nice touch although I don't think it was his intent. It wasn't an expensive car in the day, unfortunately he wrote it off just outside Ewood park (Blackburn Rovers in case you didn't know) after about 6 months ownership.

Another obscure car was a Mazda RX3, not the same credibility as the Alfa but I would certainly call it a classic, one of Mazda's first rotary engined cars and in its day faster than most things on the road. Identical to this

Another one that stuck out was a Vauxhall Victor that he seem to run for years to make a point to a work colleague that sold it him for £50 believing it was knackered.

He always changed his cars regularly up until this one and loved to tinker. He now has a VW Tiguan R Line but usually used his bus pass before Covid came along.

I know he had pictures of the Alfa and Mazda, I'll have to take a snap on my mobile when I can visit again

My dad died just after my wedding, which he couldn’t make, I was 30, he was 61. For someone that had no real interest in cars he had some beautiful and prestigious ones back in the day, the ones I remember

Two Rover P6’s
Jaguar XJ series II
Cortina 2.0l, Mk II returned after a few months as it leaked water
Two Citroen CX familliale, the first was written off by my brother, though happy memories of holidays in Torquay listen to ABBA and the beach boys
BMW 728i E23, my favourite it was awesome and remember listening to relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Mercedes 450 SLC
Fiat 131 Supermirafiora 2000, the only one I got to drive :driving:

Cav gsi was a great car

Cavalier GSI, this was mine :driving:
GSI.jpg

No pics of mine but was dark grey - same wheels though.

Craking car in it's day although looking pretty dated now. My dad loved to drive it, he used to run me to the pub and pick me up at last orders in it so he could have a play.

Mine was the 2wd one though.

It was a great car back then but did not age well - the 4 wheel drive was not really needed, as a family car not really used to explore any limits :D

I did as well but in a slightly different way during the Bond piece, I was 17 and looking to buy my first car and I was set on one of these 8)

Alfa-Romeo-GTV-6-2.5-1024x555.jpg

My dad convinced me that it would fall apart in 2 weeks and that I should buy the below, I am convinced that this cost me more to run than the Alfa ever would have, this was the first and only bit of car advice my dad ever gave me :D

I wanted an Alfasud or Marina TC as my first car. My dad told me to stop being a t*at and go for a Ford. I got a 1600 Mk3 Capri, it was truly terrible. Beige with beige colour-coded mirrors and bumpers. BFC 372V, RIP

I sold it to my mate and the propshaft fell off a week later.

My Cortina had square steering, not the wheel but it only seemed to turn in 90 degree increments and it always seemed to break down every Thursday just in the for payday.

Next car was a Capri (Cortina in a fancy frock) thank god that was more reliable.

That's a cracking car and a true classic, think you dad was right though. My mate have the smaller one, Alfa Sprint, think it was the same engine as the 1500 sud. I was in it when it blew up on the M61 early one Sunday morning. :tumbleweed:

Never made another journey but he sent me a pic a few weeks ago (not me in the pic) :|

I am an Alfa fan and have had four of them and I am certain I missed out on a classic and now they are crazy money.

My lotto win car is the 8C vert
