Hate to say it JDM, I think your dad is going to learn a very painful lesson here. The majority of insurers have it stated in their terms if keys ate left in the car then you are not covered. 
Even when washing my car round the back of the house I always keep my keys in my pocket.
Hope he doesn't have any further complications like finance on the car, otherwise getting it back (in a reasonable condition) is definitely the best outcome....

Long story but had a scooter stolen by some a"£holes a while back. They took it somewhere to 'cool off' for a couple of days and fortunately someone spotted it and alerted the police who in turned called me. I had to go to some dodgy estate at 2am in work suit and it took me, the police and two AA guys to get the lock they had put on it off (the first AAguy had to call a second when the battery on his lorry went flat 
).
Anyway - long way of saying - if you have time go for a drive around the immediate area and have a look see if it is not parked somewhere on an estate or something - you might aid recovery. A long shot but you never know esp as if was opportunistic sounds more like locals getting a car for later striping for parts or something and they won't have the imagination to park it very far away from them.
