DAB+

I have a 2015 Z4.
I love Classic FM which is moving to DAB+. I’m assuming my car isn’t compatible, though of course I could use FM?

Is there any kind of adapter I could use that plugs into the system, preferably via a cable as I just find Bluetooth totally weird 😀🤪 on the Z4!!

I think classic fm will still be available over the Internet as well, so you should be able to listen via alexa auto or your phone.

Or you could fit an MMI unit like the mr12volt unit which will give you wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. AnubisZed has a YouTube channel and includes vids on fitting it.

 Another CFM listener wondering about this one. Hopefully my Mx5 has DAB.

Well you "may" already have DAB+, or you may not, there was an upgrade from DAB only to DAB & DAB+. This was only a Firmware update with an FSC code from your local dealer.

But to check if you can currently receive DAB+ check this list out....

Mine is 2010 no dab as standard, have a mr12volt dab box fitted and also the mmi box

Dab reception when it works is good but reception not always great which is frustrating as in our other newer car mini and others it works great all the time.

Mmi radio works well as long as you have phone and data plan

To my surprise, with the S609A Nav System Pro and S654A DAB tuner, I have now got Classic FM on DAB after retuning for it; I can only assume that a previous owner got the firmware upgrade done. I can now put the stubby aerial back on; I had put the original whippy one back on to get Classic FM on FM as the stubby reception wasn't very good, but it is now not required.

Good to hear that! My car only has FM, but that's OK for me - DAB can be hit or miss in Scotland (as is the mobile signal)!!

Well Classic FM is still working on DAB in my 2015 E89 Z4 - so I'm guessing I do have DAB+. My car had problems about a year ago with the computer unit and the general computer software was updated. I'm guessing maybe this did the update required?

Well as their website states it's moved over to DAB+ as of 2nd Jan this year and that you can still receive it then I'd say you're good to go then. It could be that you had DAB+ already from the factory, although DAB+ didn't start in the UK until 2016.
There is one other possibility that I must mention, and that is "Service Following" where, if (user) enabled, and you're travelling along and the DAB signal isn't strong enough it'll switch over to the FM frequency (obviously for stations that have both!). So there is a slight possibility that if this is enabled and it can no longer 'see' the DAB frequency then it is switching over to the FM one instead automatically.

One question, have you undertaken a retune of your DAB stations?

I think when it switches over to FM it shows the FM symbol in a rather "strange" font and it seems to be working without that font. I haven't retuned it and it's still working so I think I do have DAB+ and assume it's from the software upgrade but who knows!?

Hi Dave

Do you have any further information on this DAB to DAB+ firmware upgrade please?
I have DAB as standard in my 2010 Z4 35is but I am not getting all the channels I would expect, like Heart80s, 90s etc.. I was wondering if these are DAB+ only channels. I have no option to re-tune for DAB channels either, seems to do it automatically.

Alas no i don't really. I read about this on another forum and I think it mentions it in the manual, but it's not in the parts catalogue like other FSC's are.
Now i have seen it within the internal file for the coding of the CIC headunit as a changeable option, so maybe that's all it needs. But to check this you have to have the headunit coding read to be sure.

Hi Dave
Understood. Lots of searching has turned up very little info to be honest. Many forum posts are saying it is not possible due to hardware requirements and are advising fitting a later head unit. I will have a go at reading the CIC data and see what I have.
Cheers
Jon

Not sure this will really help but anyway...

I bought my 2015 E89 about 3 years ago. One thing I disliked was that I felt that the radio quality was considerably worse than my 1998 E36 3-series BMW which had just an FM radio! Whilst my E89 was under warranty they updated the software of my unit in attempt to fix the flickering screen on it. Although I didn't particularly notice it at the time of the software update, sometime later I realised that the quality of the radio sounded much better - there were previously some really dreadful-quality channels on DAB that magically improved.

I can't be absolutely sure whether it was the software update that improved it all, or whether the unit was always DAB+ ready and the channels migrated to DAB+, but I definitely get DAB+ channels like Classic FM (and it's definitely not just the FM version.)

Thank you for this. Very interesting. I think my next step is to speak to my friendly bmw specialist who has all the latest online kit. He seems to be able to get the answers to my stupid questions. Firstly I will hook up the laptop and see what version I have and if there is a dab+ option.

Yeah good point, mine is a 2017 DAB headunit (yes, 2017!!), but I'm sure it was an available option on my previous 2012 headunit (available coding option, although not a DAB headunit), although that did have the latest ilevel firmware on it as well.

BMW changed from DAB to DAB+ from 2011 model year (cars produced after 09/2010). The DAB only units don't work with DAB+, as there are a difference in the hardware.

As far as I know, you needed to change the CIC unit to a new one when opting for this, that's why the FSC was needed.

BMW dealers in Norway had fixed prices on this for a few years.

Makes perfect sense, thanks for clarifying that
