DAB upgrade

I've just fitted a pioneer dab radio to replace the business radio cd unit.....

Im a big beliver in originality..... what is (if possible) the best option of a DAB upgrade using the old BMW head unit and one where I can use phone ?

even if its old school i still like to have the odd couple of CDs in the mutichanger (which i cant use now this new radio is fitted).

Don't get me wrong its a good radio / CD...... but I'm not sure about the look, personally it spoils the finish for me.

I did the same in my Coupe and I know what you mean, even though I chose a Pioneer that looks the least garish of after market head units!

I think the only options to keep it OEM are FM modulated DAB add on units like BMW dealers have sold in the past (search Autodab?). These ‘transmit’ the selected DAB station onto FM so you can tune in using the original radio head unit. However they require an add on screen and/or controller so still end up looking a bit crap IMO.

Thanks Chris
I've looked at several especially the auto dab units

Im going to swap it..... the OCD is kicking in !

Know what you mean, I looked into a stereo upgrade but wasn't happy with the look of them in a z4!

I kept original head unit and bought a Pure highway 600, same as the 400 model in the link but with phone connectivity and microphone. Looks like a parrot car kit when fitted and functions very similar when using phone.

I'm using the aux in and sound quality is great, it's barely ever dropped signal either!

It is pretty much the most expensive option but I can't fault it so far

Exact same unit as mine.... great option

TBH I chose it because originally I was going to fit it in the dash and two of my requirements were "clean look" and "rear USB". had I have known i would ended up fitting it in the rear and using a remote control I would probably have opted for Alpine CDE196DAB and may well change at some point in the future.

do you need any alterations to serve front speakers ?

It depends on what your plans are for the speakers, if you are remaining stock and not using a power amp you simply need to hook up the speaker output from the Poineer to the speaker connector on your Z4. If you are putting it in the rear like me you just need to make up a small harness to do that. If you are upgrading your speakers as well the wiring will be more involved especially if introducing crossovers. If you have the standard 2 way front speakers I would recommend upgrading to 3 way, but it can be a fair amount of work to do it well.
