DAB tuning not many stations?

When I use DAB I search for stations. Most I have found is 4. Absolute 80s test channel is about the only consistent one. I have never found the station's I want radio x absolute or 6 music. I am in Staffordshire. Is it a location based problem. Am I missing something in set up?
 
I drive to Peterborough and Bristol from West London regularly and have just been to Manchester and back. My X4 has DAB and most of the time like Maniac I have an abundance of stations but there are dead spots everywhere. Certain stations can handle it better. Most of the time I get Radio X but Absolute comes and goes more frequently. As does Heart (variety of areas) which is rather annoying!
 
I get a load of stations in my E89, consistent in my area (east midlands) and also when out and about elsewhere (eg Manchester, Shropshire, Cornwall etc). Odd dead spots lasting a few seconds sometimes.
 
This morning stoke on trent area 3 stations only. I held autostore down for a few secs. It looks like I missing something in the set up.
 
Sorted. Ha ha I realize now you have to go into list and choose say national or BBC . I have 6 music great stuff.
I guess a stubby aerial is out of the question if you want to listen to DAB.

Think I'm correct in saying the DAB aerial is located in the rear bumper :?
So the stubby is just for FM :?
