DA Polisher - pad/polish combo for light swirls

Hi guys, given BMW paint is hard but I only have light swirls/scratches....can anyone reccommend a pad/polish combo that will take the light scratches and swirls out and create nice glaze in one hit.

I was thinking Sonus SFX3 pad/polish but I think it is a very light cut and wont work well on BMW paint.

If I drop down to Sonus SFX2 pad/polish which proivdes a better but will I ahve to go back over with SFX3 to finish?

Hi,

Ive just posted a Rotary Kit in the forsale section including SFX 6" and 4" pads I like the sonus pads alot and really rate the Menzerna polishes.

with a d/a polishing hard paints is strenuous... you can get away with using a higher cut of polish on a higher cut pad with a d/a to be honest they are best for refining work done by a rotary... but you are safer using a d/a on your car then a rotary... id opt for a normal polishing pad lake country are best imo and go for a mid range menz polish with something like menz final finish for the finish.. or..... buy a half decent cleaner fluid and a glaze that way there is no unnecissary removal of paint..
 
and in reply to your question as to having to drop down polishes when using a higher cut... you will have to use a higher cut then refine with a lower or lesser cut.. if you are looking for a polish which can correct in one hit but also refine try swissvax cleaner fluid pro with a d.a u will have to use at quite high speeds... search for the zenith method and try this.. working up to a point of around 1500-2000 rpm then back down to 900ish

I found with my Z4 anyway i could hit it with Menzerna 3.02 and an SXF-1 Restore pad single stage correction with a DA and have no need with a second hit with a lower polish or pad combo.

I doubt this would be the case with other paints though.

it all depends on too many factors... paint hardness, colour, lighting at time of examination... what may seem perfectly fine to the owner of the car may seem completely different to a trained eye... d/a's are alot more forgiving than rotary's so best thing to do is start light and work up... ive heard many people getting good result from lime prime from dodo juice, i have not used this product myself before so i dont know if it has fillers in it or what but it may be an option to look at... imo menz work best on rotary, try final finish on a medium pad and see what it takes away... with a d/a it is alot harder to damage paint than on a rotary so aslong as you tape up and your careful give a few different polishes a go
 
Thanks for the advice everyone.

I have decided to go with a kit from a local detailer, unfoirtunately they dont stock Menzerna so heres what i will be getting.....

DAS6 Dual Action Polishing Machine with 1 x D shaped handle, 1 x soft shape handle, 1 x 6" backing plate, 1 x 5" backing plate and holdall bag. 1 x Chemical Guys 778 Cutting Polish, 1 x Chemical Guys 721 Cutting Polish, 1 x Chemical Guys 700 Cutting Polish, 1 x Green (light cutting) Hex Logic Pad, 1 x Orange (Medium cutting) Hex Logic Pad, 1 x Black (finishing) Hex Logic Pad

....£139 which I think it a pretty good price and Ive got plenty of polish and pad combinations to play around with. I will just have to start with the least aggressive and work my way up.

Good starter kit? :)

The chemical guys stuff is good for beginners as it works like the swissvax pro cleaner fluid in that it starts as a light abbrasive then breaks down to a fine polish... so exactly what you want for a 1step correction.. make sure you get a good wax to seal the car once done... remember polishing removes any protectant that you have ever added... and polishing only shines it doesnt protect like a wax or sealant does...
 
Excellent, cant wait to get my hands on this now!

I normally do the AG SRP then EGP but I think I will upgrade to AG HD once I start machine polishing as I`m not overly impressed with EGP no matter how Ive tried applying it.
 
The hex logic pads are supposedly quite good via DA. The DAS6 pro is a far torqued up motor than the typical DAS6 or megs G220 being 850w. If its the Z4 coupe. Chances are it may well have ceramic clearcoat. if thats the case, good luck with the time spent. Its tough stuff even for a 15 stone pro at the helm of a makita rotary. As for the hd wax. Personally, there are far more superior lsp's out there for cheaper or up to the same price tag so get shopping buddy and post pics up afterwards. :thumbsup:
 
Thanks again for the advice everyone....I`m having second thoughts about buying one now but I`m worried how much it would cost to get a pro to do sort the following.......

1) Bonnet and wing tops have small stone chips, swirling, marring and hologramming.
2) Front bumper has many stone chips.
3) Road rash around the wheel arches
3) Rest of bodywork is pretty good, with the a few random scratches here and there. Probably needs enhancing but no correction
4) Glass and Alloy wheels are dont need touching.

Car has recently been clay bar`d but could do with removal or iron contaminents etc

Any ideas on cost please?

REggie, The kit I was talking about was from juicydetailing

Clean your car also has a good menzerna kit for £109 (DAS-6) or £139 (DAS-6 PRO) but juicy are local to me so I was just going to go there. I can get the Meguiars G220 from a local supplier for about £150 also.

Rather than correct, could you not use the DA with a good polish & filler - say with Poorboys Blackhole? or SRP?

Scott - what would be a ball-park figure for a correction on a zed?

Would be better to get a reputable smart repairer in to sort the stone chips firstly i:e actual fill them and blow them in rather than just drop paint in. With that sorted you would be looking at a ball park figure of between £250 - £350 depending who you got in to carry out the work. The peppering round the rear arches can sometimes be lessoned by machine polishing as some are almost like dents in the clercoat rather than actual chips. Always a struggle to offer price guides without visual inspection tbh but the above mentioned is a ball park estimate which comes from a varied scope of detailers. What you have to understand is, sometimes, it is easy to call a detailer and just have machine polishing onlybut its not always the case as there will be tar and contamination on the paint even if it was clayed a short while ago for instance. To do the job right, it has to be done right. Ive done some profile polishing but did check the paint for contaminants firstly to which there were none so a reasonable bill for some tidying up. The Z4 M coupe I did last weekend had previously been clayed and was as smooth as a babys behind so was more than anything, 2 days of heavy correctional work but priced reasonably due to less of the fiddly bits needing to be done.
