cyclone separator

anyone had problems concerning the cyclone separator? It sunds like a low-noice whistle and my dealer said that the cyclone separator needs to be exchanged.. 500$ :o

I may be confused, but don't they use the same part for the muffler bearings?

I can fix that for only $400. I'm running a special today.

A separated cyclone can be very, very painful. You don't want that, now do you?

:driving:

My friends are coming from Sweden in October , perhaps they can carry the car along in their luggage.

I'll be in Croatia next month, can I borrow the car for a couple of weeks? I'll bring it back with new cyclones. I promise. Really. Have I ever lied to you before? Trust me, I'm friendly.

the cyclone or oil separator isn't an expensive part... but it involves a lot of labour to get to it, as it is well tucked away under the intake manifold.

They are known to go bad quite easily... but don't take your dealer for granted: with a COLD engine running, remove the oil filler cap. If you hear a DISTINCT "fog horn" type of noise, then the oil separator is indeed faulty.

As for the other remarks above....

what can happen if you drive with a broken oil separator? what is its function?

It prevents pressure build up inside the sump. In other words: it is harmful to the engine (pistons and seats) when continuing to drive with a bad oil separator. If faulty: get it fixed asap.

How did you discover the problem? Is it audible when the engine is just running? Can you describe the symptoms a bit more plz.

well I hear a "ringing" low-frequent noice at a certain level of throttle. Went to my dealer and he called me up later and said that the noice was caused by the broken cyclone separator :?

no it's not!! It is the venturi effect on the intake butterfly valve... and guess what: every M54 engine makes that noise, so does mine. Press throttle VERY GENTLY at a constant speed: there you have the noise.

There have been a zillion posts on different Z4 boards about the subject... called "the whistle"-noise...
