Cyberster vs M40i review

I've been looking forward to someone reviewing this and it went exactly how I expected! Ive kept my eye on the Cyberster since they announced it but never really "wanted" one, unlike the M40i/M40i manual.

I can see what MG are doing and I think they've done a decent job considering what else is on offer like this in the electric market.

From owning two Teslas in the past (and going back to my E86 Z4), I see exactly the same issues here and maybe surprisingly its not to do with electric vs petrol. The main issue for me with the majority of electirc cars (and even the latest combustion cars) is the driver controls.

Accessing/using vital controls whilst driving such as heating, cooling, defogging, fans through a touch screen is just a terrible driving experience. I'm adamant that the only reason this is happening in cars is because Tesla started it and it was something "new" that the other manufacturers felt they needed to follow to stay "up to date" and modern. But, this is a car, its not a personal device like a phone or tablet that you can give your full attention to the screen.

I'm so glad that the G29, even the latest manual version, has kept the "previous" BMW interior. The latest models of BMWs with their wide touchscreens where even the temperature is changed via touch just does not appeal to me for the same reasons. Don't even get me started on voice controls (from any manufacturer!)

Having your attention on the road and moving your hand to where you know a physical button or dial is, probably without even looking should always be the way in my opinion - at the very least for essential and frequently used driver controls.

Aside from other niggles and bugs with the Teslas (as an example), the main frustration was these screen interfaces for everything - even the speed of your windscreen wipers (which are awful in auto mode). They've tried to introduce a configurable scroller on the steering wheel to fix this but honestly it all feels so clunky when you compare to BMW who have been refining their interiors for decades. All these gadgets seem "cool" to begin with but if you drive a car daily, eventually all these small silly design descisions become very frustrating.

The last point I will make about touchscreen controls is that they an be "updated" by the manufacturer. Taking Tesla as an example again, over the 4 years the amount of updates was unbelivable and some of those included moving around controls, changing the way they work/interface and the voice controls would vary so much between update. The current Tesla voice controls are awful in my opinion, even for the simplest of commands, you just cannot guarantee they are going to work every time, even if they did before. A button is always there and it is always the same.

I really hope that if there is another Z4 after the G29 that they keep similar cabin controls to the current model - if it went the way of the cyberster I don't think I could buy one.

This just makes me want a G29 Z4 even more (and manual!, but I dont want to start that debate!)

Ahhh it was good to finally get that off my chest!

Love the Tesla Model Y I got this year having previously had a Model 3 for 4 years. But if I want to go for a drive it's the Z3 keys I reach for.

I've been through a number of iterations of second car since owning the Tesla's but they have all been Zed's - 9 Z3’s, 5 E85’s, 3 E86's and 4 E89's.

So if you're looking for the right answer unfortunately there isn't one but I suspect you already knew that

I'm with you on that one. I can't imagine getting a newer car than my G29 due to all the annoying stuff I would have to switch off every time I got in the car. I can just about handle the button to switch off engine stop/start, but that's about it. So my G29 is a keeper. Politicians abetted by car manufacturers have ruined cars :-(

I saw that video lunch time and he came to the same conclusion that I did the moment I saw the MG when it was launched. A choice between a 6 cylinder 2 seat BMW or a quick milk float. Hmmmm.
