curb appeal...

Hi Forum,

I have an 05 plated car which is a 2.2 but de-badged (but no fake badges on it!)

Very pleased with events that happened on Sat evening. Getting take-away in town so parked up, lovely weather so hood down. As I am getting out two chaps (mid 40's, well presented etc) pass me chatting, "...look at that car, wow, that looks great..." I go to the boot. One of the guys walks 10ft back to me. "...Hey, how much is that worth?..." he asks, "...what do you think?..." I reply. He eyes the car up and down and seriously comes back with, "...£40,000..."

I look at him, "...Oh no, less than £15k..." He practically gets his wallet out to buy it there and then. It's not a brand new car, just bloody classy and stylish and just goes to show that you don't need mega bucks to look loaded, just have a Z4. In hindsight I should have said yes, do you want to buy it for £30k, and then gone and got an ///M!

Any similar stories?

Yup! I pulled into a petrol station in my zmc and a female client of mine pulled up alongside. "How are you?" she said, "fine thanks, you?" i said.

Then she said, "I'm fine, hey, i see the MITIE badge on your car, when did you leave your company and start with them?". (www.mitie.co.uk)

It took me a while to understand what she was on about, but needless to say my explanation of BMW's M Division went straight over her head. I was thinking about de-badging at that time. I did it that night!

She didn't offer to buy it but it did finalise by decision to de-badge!

An 05 2.2 is worth considerably less than 15k, but point taken. Never had a stranger say much to me about mine, just people I know. And it's rarely complimentary, haha.

i mostly get called a poser, pimp wanabe on acount of the red on black and the most common...cock :P it does turn heads though, and i smile everytime i look at it so that will do me!

Spud,

Yeah, I know it is worth less than £15k, but he was convinced it was worth £40k, if I had gone under £10k he would have thought I was pulling his leg and joking and that I was hiding the fact it was worth £40k. I did say less than £15k... I live in Devon, they seem to be rare down here. I have never had anyone ask me about my car before, but never had insults either. I have taken to parking around the corner from client meets as they think I don't need the business though!

Great story Outrun.

Yes i've had similar experiences myself.

I bumped into a guy that i went to school with a few months back as i was getting into my car. He said 'bloody hell Lucy, nice car! That must have cost you about £60,000?!'

And at the petrol station once, a few guys pulled up at the pump next to me. 1 of them said, 'you and ya car is beautiful love, how much did dat cost ya?' (yes he spoke like that! ) So i said thanks, it was £25,000. And he didn't believe that it was that 'little' !

It is a very beautiful classy looking car. And i have to agree that it does look a lot more expensive than they are.

Everyone at my work and old work colleagues think my Z4 is worth more then it is. They cant believe it because i'm in a graduate role at work and before this only worked part-time at tesco while at uni, its surprising how fast things can change.
I paid 13.5k back in january but tell them its worth 15k which i think it is in todays market, what surprises me is theres alot of standard cars(golf, focus, astra) out there that are worth more.

ps. its the main reason i wanted a facelift model, i think they look newer, more modern and therefore more expensive.

Same story here - everyone at work was asking if i'd got a secret pay rise they didnt know about....

Un1eash I totally agree with you - that's why I wanted a facelift too, I think they do look more modern esp the rear set up, also makes the car look wider

I get a lot of people asking me how much I paid for mine. I normally say £40,000. (I could have had it from new :D )

i pulled up outside my local sainsburys the other day, i had the roof down as it was amazing weather, as i was folding away the roof i saw an old couple which i am guessing were both about 80, walked past the car and she said...."wow, what car is that"... he said to his wife "its some sort of BMW"... she then replied...."i love the wheels"... then off they went .......

a woman about 80 years old, loving my deep dish alloys - respect..!

As the newcomer in the squadron half the people ask me if I brought a car over and then what did I bring. When I tell them a Z4 roadster, only a handful know right off it's a bmw. So then I get asked what make and tell them and they are like how the hell do you afford that. I always say it's simple....just buy used.
What they don't know is there is I'm wanting to hop in a M.
I'm hoping BMW military sales deals with used cars, but I don't think they do. I supposed I could always get the new Z4..... :tumbleweed:

You do mean your car though...right?

haha, yes my car!

im always getting grief off my mates for the car, i know its just jealousy, i usually ask mates if they want a go, see their face light up and then tell them to go fornicate with themselves

I thought all the comments would be negative when i got mine tbh. But i've had some good ones, a lot off people down my road as they always see me cleaning it (been the same with all my cars, but never the comments!). Also, when i was in the Yorks Moors last week I came out of a shop to find a guy and his son looking round it, he said he had one as a courtesy car one time and loved it, even though it was a 2.0. He really wanted to know about the performance of the 3.0, like a 18 year old, asking about the top speed etc lol.

Have to disagree on the facelift car looking more expensive most people i speak to do not even know what a Z4 is let alone spot any difference but i am biased as i love pre facelift Z4,s especially french fry tailights more retro looking car.

As for curb appeal had two comments good ones on my car from Cobra owners thats the best in my book plus two young lads in France taking pics on mobile phones :D .

Had a bloke with his son saying look at that lovely sports car while sat at the lights :D and at the same lights heard a woman ask her her husband what the silver car was never heard his reply but she answered oh my god its gorgeous :D

That is f**king brilliant!!!!!!!!!! Actually laughed out loud when I opened the link to mitie and saw their font/logo (I couldn't have told you what the logo looked like before now).

Actually it was nice when the concierge at the Columbus Hotel in Monaco allowed me to park at the front door next to an SLR roadster on Monaco Grand Prix day! I think we have a picture somewhere that i'll try to find. Next time we'll try to park at the Hotel De Paris at Casino corner!

If its stares you want, south west france is the place....last week during a ten-day 2500 mile trip, including a Pyrenees crossing into northen spain, all I saw was a sad old MX5, a TVR and an export TR6 (with those revolting orange running lights)...no other ragtops whatsoever....so you can imagine all the looks I got from the locals.....they hardly ever see a car without a roof! and IMHO, the Z4 is at its best without that ragtop.....
