Yep, seems like it's broken. My driver's side one wont pop open. Is there a guide for replacement / swapping the unit? I had a quick sesrch but I only see threads where BMW wont fix under warantee, seems OTT to take to BMW for.

Wasnt really aware of doing anything abnormal, just got in the other day and it wouldnt spring out once pressed.

I had the adjustible plastic arm snap off on mine. I went to the dealer and bought one for around £40. To swap them over was easy. Theres a screw in the air vent just above it.

There's a chap on here who 3D printed a small part that broke on his - he may be able to assist if you can get it out and ascertain which bit has broken?

I would normally of done some investigative actions before posting but thought it maybe wise to post anyway whilst on the tube and find out if it was common.

I'll take a sledgehammer to it later and see what i can find. It seemed pretty stuck in so who knows what SWMBO did to it (it must be her fault, as i'm a man, thus infallible).

As you cant open it you will need to slide the faceplate off. It will push either to the left or right (can't remember which) to remove. You can then get to the screw.

Managed to take the unit out - seems you need to remove the vent & housing too. i'm not entirely sure which bit is broken - if any. There was a loose piece in the casing so i'll see if i can put it back together.

Is it £40 for a replacement cupholder unit? i'll try and dig out the part number from the bmwparts website.

In case anyone was particularly excited to find out the cupholder part number... I believe this is what i need for drivers side, UK car:

Part No 51457070324

I'll see if i can put mine back together tonight (i'm not convinced anything is broken beyond a spring popping out), else i'll order one of the above from Soper BMW.

Worth noting there's an older version - and the above photo/link supersedes that. I wonder if they revised it to improve the design.

If you change your mind and don't want to fix it, buy a pair of Ultimate Cupholders. It's probably the best cheap mod in my car. I've never spilled a drop due to the placement and design. http://ultimatecupholders.com/
