Hi,
Yes you can, so easy to install takes about 5 mins per cup holder
I went t dealership bought parts and they fitted for free 
Tbh, wind deflector, i have the fabric one that covers the bars, jo done and cheap too

You're going to see a split opinion on the cup holders! I use mine a lot for takeaway coffee (Caffe Nero, Carluccio's and the like) and bottled water... as aquazi mentioned they are a bit of a pain for water as you need to get the right ones - can't remember which.
If you're not going to use them regularly I'd be inclined to leave them, they will probably develop a rattle over time. Mine have been okay - maybe this is regular use?
If you can I'd get an OEM on the wind blocker as it stows neatly in the boot when you're on your own
Can be had to find with all the bits though.

Are you operating them correctly? once opened the clamp has to be squeezed around the bottle/cup. Mine work perfectly and I use them all the time, often using the passenger side to avoid the issue you correctly make about knocking them getting in and out.
Fabric windblocker performs better as it slows air not blocks it and is the oem solution, clear plastic looks better and avoids the darkened rear view. You'll get many diferent opinions so it's personal choice

I think the cupholders are absolutely essential!
They are crap by anyone standards. Poor design and placement. But they serve a purpose on the motorway!
Just make sure the cup of coffee is no more than half full, otherwise the jarring ride on the Z4 will cause the coffee to spill on your crotch! Yes it happened to me!!! :roll:
