Cup holders

I have searched :)

But wanted to get any up to date opinions. I like to take a hot drink with me whenever I do a long journey - given my work commute is 150 miles (thankfully not daily!) I do these journies quite frequently and since changing from E85 to E89 I now use the Zed for basically everthing where I don't need to carry more than 1 passenger :D

I have the standard cup holders fitted in the arm rest. Not only are they very unstable, it also means you have to have the arm rest up so are basically completely useless (and will shortly be ripped out and replaced with the full storage tray option).

I know the factory cup holder is LHD only, and I see there is an eye wateringly expensive option that fits into the little storage tray IF you don't have a smokers package fitted - which I do. I also see the cheap and cheerful black plastic one which slides between the passenger bolster and the center console which, at £8, I'm tempted to try despite some dodgy Amazon reviews.

Before I potentially throw £8 down the toilet, does anyone have an first hand recommendations?

Might be interested in buying the armrest cup holder tray from you if you take it out. Does your car have phone prep in the armrest?

Yes it does - seems to be a bit tricky to remove though (the phone side anyway) so I'll see what kind of state it's in on removal.

Out of interest, you have a phone that would fit??

I have the storage option under the armrest, it’s more practical for me

I tried to remove this in my car with the same intention of replacing it and the cup holder with the storage tray but although I managed to get the snap in adaptor out I couldn't find a way to properly disconnect it. It seems the only option was to cut the cables from underneath but I didn't want to hack the car so I left it as it is. I now use the cup holders as storage for bits and pieces.

The few threads I've seen show some kind of black connector near a pcb, which supposedly cones off with a bit of fighting and a good pull - so we'll see. I think it's the snap in connector itself that people struggle with, haven't had a look yet - job for the weekend. Got the replacement parts already though so good to go.

can you post details of the "eye watering" expensive option, as I'm about to replace the ashtray with the storage tray, thanks

Yes that's the design I was toying with - was hoping to hear from someone who had actually tried it in their E89.

Your wish is my command Sir ..

The quality is a bit chinaeapish but it works alright if you are driving alone or have a rather slim wife.

I have one in mine, Its ok if you put some stick back foam strip round the inside of the holders. and Its only any good if your on your own as it sits a bit on the passenger seat, but if you are the only one in the car, as i am when i use it its fine. If someone else is in the car then it fits in the cargo net behind the passenger seat.

I have never even tried to use it with a phone. You have to buy adapters from BMW, don’t know if they do them for recent phones, but even if they did, I’m too lazy to plug it in every time.....Bluetooth is a godsend.

Yes just concluded this myself after receiving from Amazon today. 2 sharp bits at the back which I've dremelled out, but the outer rim of the whole unit is too thin/sharp up against the leather on the center console - already left a mark just trial fitting.

Shame the whole rear of the unit isn't sealed up, then it would be fine.
