Does any else fine the cup holders under the air vents in the Z a bit crap?

Generally I'll use them to hold a bottle of water but I hate the way the bottle flops about in the holder.

Is there maybe a way to tighten it up that I'm missing or are they just pretty naff?

Depending how wide the bottle is, you can squeeze the clip on the side, it retracts inwards to hold things tighter. If the bottle is wide, it probably wont be able to move in at all, so will stay floppy

There are 2 camps - those that agree and those that find them ideal

When you say bottles flop about have you squeezed the jaws together to grip the bottle? I drive end to end of the country with bottles and coffee cups in and never have any probs at all.

I didn't think the UK cars came with those crappy cup holders.

I bought two of these and have been very happy. Put the cup on the floor where it can't fall over and still with in reach.

I have even used them at the track just to see and they held my Bottle of water no matter how "spirited" i drove!

I think I'm going to get one of those, 2 Zero. I used to put my travel coffee cup in the passenger cup holder--after 18 months, danged thing broke! I had to make a diving catch of my coffee cup. Using driver side one now, but it gets in the way. I much preferred the ones in my old 325Ci or in hubby's X5.

Somebody told me about these I think it was Blazen or Jack B1
They are a bit pricey but they will be around long after this car is gone

When the universal version is ready for the Z3 I will look into these, thanks for sharing the link!

I have never used the provided cup holders. They scare me. I know I will either break it or forget that there is a cup in it and break it and spill hot coffee down the leg of an expensive pair of light colored trousers and ruin them (so much for faith in BMW engineering). If you must drink and drive, the below link sounds more useful.

The two in the Z3 center console are inconveniently located for anyone to use, I purchased a two plastic cup holders that hook on to the door storage area and are really useful and out of the way but always accessible, but think the one's Mark shared are even better than the plastic ones I have been using for the last 10 years.

A bit too "SUV" for me! :P

Saw this on here a few months ago. The trick with the cup-holders in the Z4 is...

1) Put cup / bottle / can in holder.
2) Ratchet arm closed as far as possible.
3) Remove cup / bottle / can.
4) One extra click on ratchet.
5) Return cup / bottle / can.

Holds Grandé coffees safely enough without putting it down my crotch.

I think they're pretty neat design and have never had any spills. I tend to use them the way biffa describes. Only thing is I've always wondered if my driver's side holder has been missing a piece - it only has half a base so things are sometimes a little lopsided if they don't fill the holder fully.

I think they're great! Always worked well for me. As has already said, they can be tightened so give it a go.

They seem fine to me and hold most things i want to put in there without any fuss or concern, tbh i dont know how much more you can ask of a cup holder?

I think the cup holders are great, adjustable and stowaway. I even like the feel of them as they come out and retract. Quality!!!
