Cup Holder Faceplate.....wtf?

So recently the wife surprised me on my birthday with a drivers side cup holder replacement. She knew both were oddly broken. She balked a little when she discovered she had to also buy a face plate for it but shelled the extra $20 to complete.
The new plate was quite clean.
At first I told her I could just use the old plate. But seeing as the new one was in better condition I decided to go ahead and keep it and not send it back.

So I'm sitting with this old face plate in front of me.......and looky at this crap......

So the question is..... and I know a fair many of you have replaced these cup holders...did your Original face plate have this "Plastidip" treatment on it also?
I ask as the new one is just shiney black plastic like whats under this old face plate.

All cleaned up....And no it was not dirt and grime.

From personal experience, in the early 2000s some BMW and Mercedes interior plastics were painted. This just sloughs off eventually and looks awful. I imagine that’s behind your finding. I wrapped my E46 interior plastic trim pieces with mock carbon fibre to hide the problem.
 
I retrofitted cupholders to my car last year and they also had the same finish as your originals. You can see it in the pic below as the faceplates were a bit scratched when i had them.20170113_125052.jpg
 
The drivers side isn't made by BMW it seems. Buying from real OEM and the like it's 3x the price and comes from a 3rd party.

Nothing a bit of carbon wrap won't fix though. Makes the drink taste better.
 
I found my MFSW's plastic parts had that plastic/rubber sort of covering. I sanded it of and resprayed them all, looks so much cleaner :)
 
Anybody got a RH one for sale ??? the plastic swivel inside broke on mine

I think thats why the clip is adjustable

Haha I think most Z4 owners have this epiphany at some stage!
