Do you keep opening it to see if it's gone out, just like you do with your fridge light

The light does not go out with ignition off- you can see it if you look closely in the dark- I repaired the snapped switch on mine when I broke it years ago but from memory I removed the door and and screwed a self tapper in where the little plastic stick was previously. Still works fine now.

Indeed it does, but there are times when the car could be unlocked for extended periods, car service/repair, bodyshop repairs etc.

If fixing the broken off lug it is not an option then I'd suggest at least replacing the normal filament bulb with an non-canbus* LED one for less current consumption.

(*I've made the assumption here that the cubby hole light wouldn't throw a 'bulb-out' canbus warning - anyone know for sure?)

I've initially superglued my lug back on & then once that held I reinforced with some 2-part epoxy resin glue, so far so good.
