Cubby hole light

By cubby hole I mean the storage space between the two seats. Is it normal for the light in it to be on all the time when the ignition is on, or has mine developed a fault as I would have thought it should only come on when you open it ?

Has the little tab in the middle of the bottom of the door snapped off? It makes contact with a relay switch that turns the light off when you shut the door.

Common issue... easy to drop something down into the hinge and snap it off accidentally.

There's a microswitch along the bottom edge, if you open the cubby hole door half way & run your index finger to the middle where it hinges you'll feel it, press this in & it clicks slightly - this should turn the light off.

There's a 'nib' along the bottom edge of the door that should press against the microswitch when you shut the cubby hole door, having said that mine appears to have broken off & doesn't shut the light off either - however it does go off anyway when the car is locked & also may auto off after a certain time.

Something else to fix on mine then :|

Thanks, it has indeed broken off, and I even remember the incident when it probably did so ! I don't mind though if it switches itself off when ignition off, as it won't drain my battery.

Does anyone know how to get the cubby door off?, I 've undone the two small screws on the hinge but it doesn't want to budge.

I've just glued the nib back on but with little confidence that it will hold properly, If I could get the door off I would make something a bit stronger.

Just pull, it will require some effort and you need to pull at the right angle from memory. Basically the same angle the screw were at.

Thanks guys, I was worried about breaking something & didn't want to apply any force, I will have another go in daylight.

All the screw due is expand the rivet. Once removed, you have to pull it straight out (don't wriggle the door). Insert it straight as well and push it down, only plastic so be firm but not be rough.

You don't have that if you have the BT kit.

This was from a follow member when I did the satnav retrofit. He did not have the BT kit in the car, mine did and therefore I did not have the velcro either as the cradle is there instead.

I cant believe BMW would be so mean & stingy as to not fit the Velcro as standard, I was wondering why I didn't have Velcro as well, assumed it was a facelift thing...

Diz, are you sure it's on all the time.... ?

Do you keep opening it to see if it's gone out, just like you do with your fridge light :P
