CTEK & charging

That is not true though - the front connector (+) has surge protection on it, the battery obviously not.

But they do / can fail. I would rather use the car's own electrical fail safe protection than bypass that.

What you are on about is more to do with jump starting and using a booster to start the car and yes your dead right with using the front connecters, but the OP is on about charging .

+1 - with charging, it makes no difference how you connect to the battery. In fact with intelligent chargers such at the CTEK, having any additional car 'protection' in the way may make it more difficult for the charger to gauge the state/condition of the battery

I leave mine unlocked with bonnet up when charging so less chance of driving away with charger plugged in.

I have a cover, so can't leave the bonnet up

Also I have a post it note on my dash saying 'CHARGER!' and I hope that will stop me driving off

Charger also located in boot using the quick connectors supplied - boot closes easily then plugs in to extension lead - simples !

Was paranoid initially about using the point under the bonnet but as said the charger has a surge protector - saves all the faffing about lifting the bonnet up - been this way for 3 years without a problem.

Just don't forget to disconnect the lead before you drive off or reverse out the garage

Where is the surge protection? From what I recall of WDS the jump points are connected directly to the starter and battery.

I use the cigarette lighter option when charging with my CTEK. My power socket in garage is at the back of the car so I put the CTEK in the boot and plug it into the wall socket with the tailgate closing gently onto the cable which I wrap in kitchen paper to ensure the cable is not pinched etc. The tailgate boot interior light goes out shortly after closing to a slightly ajar position.

Using the cigarette lighter socket with an extension cable through the car i find is so simple without the need to connect to battery terminals or front charging point inside the engine bay.

Each to their own but it works well for me... :)

This is what it says in the book - I don't feel inclined to do anything else - Im sure that BMW's engineers have their reasons.

The CTEK chargers (and other similar hi tech ones designed to be left on for long periods) dont use high voltage.
Be interesting to put my scope on mine to see what happens (current and voltage). I'll report back with the findings.

Andy.

And we are not offcially "recharging" the battery, we are keeping it steady at full charge. Huge difference.
Good point though.

Andy.

My last CTEK has died and I don't have the receipt to see if it's still under warranty. Where is the best place to buy so that the warranty can be claimed against if it happens again?

Got mine from Amazon, got a replacement after 2 years. Have a 5 year warranty.

Replacement process was to send it back, get a refund and buy a new one.

New one was more expensive than the old one (was an offer), so I got a refund of the difference as well in Amazon credit.

My CTEK would take weeks to charges my battery

Does a great job of keeping it topped up though.

It does say "only connect via under bonnet etc"
I don't know how much more specific the manufacturer can be?

Connect under the bonnet then if you are concerned. :)

No worries on that front !
Just a guess here, but I would say that you don't use the under bonnet pins? :D
