Hi guys,
Are CSL wheels notorious for being difficult to balance?
I've just got my Z4MR a couple of weeks ago and sourced genuine CSL wheels - used I might add but immaculate. I got my local mechanic to balance and fit them but he thought a couple of them were buckled. Either that or because they are mag he thought they might be known to be difficult to balance. Anyway, the car drives fine enough but I get wheel shake at speed. I don't noticed it when both hands are on the wheel but if you take one hand off or even two ( just to test) there's definitely wheel shake.

Any thoughts?

Not had any experience with CSL (no doubt others have) but over many years and cars of various descriptions/types have never had a problem with balancing of alloys provided they are in perfect condition. Could be two issues here:

1. You mechanic either doesn't have the right kit or understand how to balance properly
2. Your mechanic is right and the wheels are damaged.

Suggest you get the 'unbalanced' wheels checked by someone else who may confirm either of the above.

If the wheels are buckled they should be able to demonstrate this on the balancing machine, my fitter should how both my front 108's were quite badly buckled, but both balanced fine in saying that.
 
Perhaps moving to a lower profile made the difference and you're noticing more of a harsh ride.
Get a second opinion.
 
i had the exact same problem, youve described it down to a tea, after i took the wheels off and retorqued in the star fashion, this shimmy went away!!
 
CSL's shouldn't be difficult to balance unless they are damaged. Your wheels aren't magnesium either, that's an ancient myth. I would try a different tyre fitter before I did anything else to be honest.
