Crunching passenger window

Wound the window up today and it made a crunching sort of sound that got worse as it went up. Its up but I am guessing the regulator is about to go. Am I right? Its in the garage now as were off on two weeks holiday tomorrow morning so I suppose thats a nice big bill for when I get home. Can I do anything to prevent it snapping or is it now down to fate?

From previous experiences with a 3 series thats not a great noise to hear. The regulator uses a braided wire and a kind of corkscrew wheel that the wire wraps around when the window goes up and down. The corkscrew part can pop off its pivot and the wire tangles up making a horrible crunching noise. If it's quite a loud noise then I would say leave it up and time to replace the regulator....otherwise it's likely to snap when your out in the rain or something like that!

Thanks..... i thought as much

Yep, regulator needs changing. Had to replace mine recenty... IIRC around £105 for the part (from Joe@Soper) and indy fitted it for £50, which I thought was worth giving it to him considering it would take at least 2hrs.

My window regulator needed to be replaced. £125.00 from BMW (with a 2 year warranty)
Local garage fitted it £42.00 labour (only took 50 mins to replace)
It doesn't have to cost the earth. :D

My passenger side window has gone on the blink earlier today..... As mentioned earlier, made a kind of crunching sound when almost all of the way down, then on its own accord, went up to the closed position. I wondered what was happening :?

It just seems to move very slightly if you try and open the window now, but it certainly wont open.
I wonder if its because the guides have all dried out with the recent warm weather?
