Crumbling Brake Lamp Lens

Has anyone else experienced this?

When I first got my Z4 (it's an early E85 2.5i) chunks of the upper edge of the central brake lamp lens (the one in the boot door) were missing, so I had it replaced. In almost no time at the new lens started splitting along the top edge, and now the corner has broken off. Can't understand why this is happening. Slightly undersized aperture perhaps? Anyway, there's not much point in replacing the thing a second time if it's just going to crumble again. I'll need to find the cause and rectify that first.

Anyone with any experience? Ay ideas?

This is a common fault caused by the springs which hold it in place being too strong or being over tightened.
I believe BMW have now made a softer spring to use when fitting the light which should help to eliminate the problem somewhat.

Yes thanks ... after rummaging around on this Internet thingy I came up with some info that confirms your response. Even found the service bulletin. Apparently you have to change the original 82N springs for weaker 40N ones and add a washer. Brilliant! So I'm on the trail of the necessary parts now.

Thanks again!
