Cruise control

Hi,

I am looking at the possibility of an e89, the spec looks amazing, except there appears to be no cruise control. Does anyone know if this can be retrofitted? I found a few posts, but they appear to be a couple of yours out of date.

Thanks
Chris

It can be, but do you do mainly motorway journeys on clear motorways? I ask because on any car I've had cruise, I've never had a clear enough road or motorway to use it!

Cruise is a very useful tool when you have it. and you miss is when you've had it and the next car doesn't have it.

If you don't have it now, you'll likely not miss it if you know what i mean!

I had CC on
My last car but dont have it on the zed and I really miss it. 50mph average speed zones are a breeze with it.

I would love to retro fit it!!!

If you plan on using it a lot, then perhaps its worth it. I have rarely ever used it in my cars because I've never used a road where its been empty enough not to have to turn the flippin thing off every five minutes. Easier just to pay attention to driving and use the throttle and brake .. old-school!

I ve just done 350 miles this week end 240 miles motorway would have loved the cc as all my other cars had it but not my mzed

Mines an auto and as I tend to drive in an (ahem) progressive manner, it goes a long way towards me keeping my licence thru town.

Mine's an auto and tend to leave it in normal mode thro town - not quite sure what you mean "progressive manner" tho and how it helps keep your licence :?

I don't use mine much. London and M25 require dramatic speed changes all the time.

You ever played Cruise Control Chicken?

ie behind somebody and catching up, can you leave it on and get out into the next lane ? without a dab on the brake ????

AFAIK it can be retrofitted but it's not a simple operation despite the fact that it was only a £250 optional extra.
I specifically wanted cruise and rejected a few cars as a consequence during the search.
As other people have said, once you get used to it, not having it can be a real pain. Busy motorways are not appropriate but its great in 30, 40 & 50mph zones.

Er..no! I think CC good in places like USA with big roads less traffic.

Cruise can definitely NOT be retrofitted. I checked before buying.
Personally it's a mst for me so I hunted down a car with it. Which reduces choices a lot. Shame on BMW fr not making this standard

A fella I used to work with many years ago used to do this - It scared the living daylights out of me!

The dealers say it cannot be done because BMW have not (yet) put the requisite kit together.
However if you read the link in Maniac's post, it can be done - but a bit along the lines of "it's not quite impossible".

I did the same thing - but the wait was worthwhile :)

To be honest the car is for the weekend fun runs, but I also like to do long trips across the continent - in fact this cars first really journey will be 2500 miles down throu germany, italy and on to the south of France, this is where I think I will miss ... but it may well be a phsycological thing, because I know its not there, it makes me want to use it if you get me...only time will tell, but I don't think it will cause to much of an issure - fingers crossed

I got CC on the Z because I drive hire cars a lot for work and they always have it and I used to miss not having it on my own. I mostly use it for motorway driving, obviously, where you can set it at 85mph... ahem, I mean 70mph :innocent: and just cruise along tutting at all the people playing leap-frog with you because you know you're the one keeping a constant pace

But actually I find myself using it more and more to regulate my speed on A-roads - I like to open the taps on the Z on the national limits but I'm very wary of getting clocked in 40 and 30 zones through towns and villages on major roads, so I just hit the Cruise and set it to 30 or 40 and let the car do the work - its nice when you spot an unexpected speed trap and don't have to worry about checking your MPH.

Could not live without it. Here in Calif. I set it at 55-80 and off I go. Adjusting speed with the CC is my preferred way to drive on the Highways. It works well for me up to 90mph. Additionally, when I need (or desire) a faster speed, hit the accelerator, up you go, then back off and the car returns to the previous setting. I have also noted I get much better gas mileage in CC.

Could not live without it? :D How on earth do you drive the rest of the time, not by the old fashioned brake and accelerator method surely? How retro lol... I can see its uses in countries with many clear miles between destinations, here in the UK, as I've already said, you spend too much time turning it back on as the roads are rarely clear.
