cruise control retrofit: use

Hi all, had my car serviced today (will write a report once i'll pay the bill, i retrofitted the cruise control to my dec 2004 2.5 Z. It works but i'm not sure if i'm missing something. to activate it i must push it, keeping push it i increase speed, moving it up, down, pulling it, nothing happens... is it normal? Don't think so otherwise BMW wouldn't have made the clutch moving in all other directions!
 
Up or down cancels cruise. Pulling it back decreases speed. Perhaps you screwed up the install?

What does the servicing have to do with it? Did it work beforehand?
 
I fitted mine the other day, pulling it back to decrease speed seems delayed, so you have to hold it for a second or two before it starts slowing down, although its the same for increasing speed. I can't imagine why any of the functions wouldn't work unless it is a 2nd hand stalk?

The ECU's cruise control speed algorithm is pretty complex (likely a form of PID control loop) - if you've only bumped the speed one or two notches (up or down) then the transition will only be slow so as not to overshoot the desired new speed.

My understanding is that the stalk contains individually wired switches (rather than a bus system) so it's possible for it to be a wiring error. Seems crazy that the installer didn't properly test it though....
 
My CC was fitted by the factory but it is a bit odd compared to other vehicles. Push to activate, up or down to cancel. push or pull once to incrementally increase / decrease speed, push/pul and hold to smoothly (but slowly and with delay) increase/decrease speed. I find push/pull and hod to be weirdest - the speed seems to jut upo/down a coupe, of notches when the stalk is released.

Youi get sued to it and Id rather have it than not.
 
I actually find the CC setting and use very intuitive - you can do it without looking. Which is more than can be said for the numerous buttons used for the Mazda 2's system.

Plus you don't have to bugger around with first enabling cruise control using another button. I probably use my cruise control about 75% of the time - stops me from collecting speeding tickets ;)

I didn't even know about the push/pull and hold. Will have to try it out...

do you mean the one on the end?

if so that's used to resume the previously set speed after you've had to brake/change gear for something :D
