Cruise Control Retro-fit

Bought the switch, cut out the cowling, tested the switch all works, easiest mod going.

Just one thought though, The switch was £60ish, even with the cowling it's £150ish, anyone got any idea how much it cost to get fitted as a factory option on an 04 car, I know it wasn't £60.

Delighted you went the switch only route. Such a huge saving for what I bet took you less than an hour

over £500!!!

find yourself another one... mine quoted £300 - I thought that was bad!

Yours will be slightly more complicated because the wiring wont be present but that's taking the pi$$.

Ive not informed my insurance - as it looks OEM...

Yeah I was hoping for around £250-300. The dealer told me "2.5hrs work" and "car has to be re-coded" and "needing the car for 2 days" brah brah. I cant afford it right now but this is one option I'd really like. I suppose insurers wont be tell the difference if it looks exactly oem - I assume there is no data base on which option my car came out with from the factory?

In terms of the insurance - there is a factory build sheet for each car and it clearly shows exactly what was standard and factory fit options. The dealer could tell if they really wanted to find out.

It won't affect the warranty at all unless in the course of fitting you do something stupid and damaged something. Dealers are only concerned or pay any attention if a mod is related to problem, so if say you change the air filter that could moan about engine warning lights. Fit non oem pads then complain about the brakes, etc.

Real warranty voiders are the changes that increase performance and thus component wear rates such as chips, exhausts, superchargers, or very obvious body mods like an ///M front, etc..

Thanks CJ as always:thumbsup: I might buy the switch and get my in law to dremel the cowl for me.........

On the otherhand, seeing as I flooded the flat and 2 floors beneath last time I had a go at DIY, I might get an indie to do it

just ordered the switch only from my stealers for £60.50 got to wait a week as there are none in the country and the computer was only showing one in germany so looks like a job for next weekend !

have a spare cowel in a box if anyone wants it.

the other benefit of the 150 kit is that it comes with the extra wiring required on some cars, presumably the switch only doesnt ?

If you need the cable it's a separate part number and costs just a few £'s, so not an important factor.

CJ is this the part number for the CC wiring 61 12 0 411 248

With more and more average cameras poping up etc might be useful, not that I can drive the bloody thing at the minute with my knee :(

srhutch - I thought I had that part number to hand, but don't. It's just referenced as wiring harness A in the retrofit instructions.
You'd need to ask a dealer parts team for the number. If they cannot find it on the main system then they have a separate system that can identify individual components that would otherwise be in a kit.

Not very helpful I'm afraid

srhutch pretty sure thats the right part no have a look here http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/61120411248/

Thats where I got it from so thanks for the confirmation

well.. I think i've found the second mod for my car already, and I haven't even got it yet. lol
for £60 odd quid, it'd be rude not to :)

Hang on, just checking i'm not being thick...

I've got a 54-plate pre-facelift Z4 3.0i. All I need to do to gain cruise control is buy the stalk at ~£60, cut a section out of my lower steering column cowling, plug it in to the wiring that's already there (being a pre-facelift), and it'll just work with no programming required?

If so, it'd be rude not to...

Edit: the reason I'm asking is because of the new average speed cameras on the main dual-carriageway between me and Glasgow (the A80). 40mph limit instead of 70mph normal while the roadworks are on. I'm good at moderating/maintaining my speed, but the Z4 just takes the smallest flex of your foot and you gain 5mph so easily...

Check your build date...

pre Oct 2004 yes the wiring is in place, post Oct 2004 it isnt.... you could also just pop the steering column cowl off and take a peek for a currently redundant plug (photo earlier in this thread from my car)...

you can also buy the wiring pack but becomes more complicated...

If you want to be 100% sure it would take 2 minutes to remove the cowling and check for the wires, they are taped onto the wheel loom right behind where the Cruise Control switch would be.

There is one screw to remove the cowling, the screw is located behind the arm to adjust the position of the steering wheel. It's quite literally plug and play, the only work involved is cutting the hole for the stalk in the cowling.

Fitted this myself at the weekend, just needed a decent stanley knife to cut the cowling and 60sec to find the connector and plug it all in. Wouldn't have tried without the info on here, top mod

Cheers for the info folks, I'm sure my Z4's a June 2004 build so should have the wiring (it was registered end-Oct 2004 - actually having it's MOT done today). I'll pop the cowling off later to check, and if the wiring's there I'll treat the car to cruise control as a little 5th birthday present :D
