Cruise Control & Rain Sensor divorce

Greetings all,

After being unable to find the source of a problem with the rain sensor and its inability to properly signal when to wipe rain off of the windshield, I decided to pull the fuse and restore the intermittent capability to the wand. Upon doing this, I found that the cruise control is run through the very same fuse. How brilliant and wise of BMW to tie together 2 functions that are so closely related in the driving arena... :x

Has anyone devised a method by which to split these 2 infinitives? I would like cruise control to function and leave the rain sensors opinion out of the equation.

Not sure about the fuses and work about, however wouldn't it be an easier option to just disengage the power connector from the rain sensor module as it just plugs in?
 
Certainly is a good thought, Swiftly. I presume that pulling the module plug will still allow the wand to control the intermittent wiper relay?

I am not an expert on the finer details of the electrics, however it is only a 2 second job to see if it works, unless it needs the sensor to complete the circuit :)

What exactly is the problem with the wipers, is it that the sensor doesn't work or is it the wipers do their own thing when on auto ??
 
Initially they would only work (with the wand on intermittent) the first time (i.e. one wipe) but nothing after. If I moved the sensitivity dial I would get one wipe and then nada. I checked the rain sensor as I thought the adhesive was de-laminating but it was fine. I found that if I pressed on the bottom of the sensor it would work as advertised but after release would resort to doing nothing. I removed the fuse and the intermittent function would be time-based, but this removed my cruise control. A short while ago I replaced the fuse to get cruise control back and during a rain this past weekend I tried the intermittent function again and now it works. Still temperamental as sometimes if seems to forget what its job happens to be, so I adjust the mirror and it snaps to.

Hmmmm, German engineering...
 
Sounds like you have a dry joint on the rain sensor circuit board ?

Might be worth a strip down and look at.
