Hi All, i've just been quoted £150 (+£100 labour) for a kit for my 2004 Z4 2.5i auto by Cooper BMW in Teeside. Does this sound like a good deal? I keep reading that kits are available for around £60. Bit confused as a new Z4 owner. Any help out there please?

Cheers

Welcome to the Forum Darren.

I believe the basic switch/stalk is around £75.00, plus a new bottom cover (although it's dead easy to cut-out your own, as the shape is already there.

The early cars are pre-wired, so it's just a case of disconnecting the battery, taking -off the lower cover, plugging-in the new switchgear and replacing the cover with either a new one or your own modified one.

I'll be doing mine soon!!

No way I'd pay for that to be done, it looks an easy DIY job. Best of luck!

Slimy price change by BMW - I got mine with 20% discount for <£50 2 years ago

Please don't pay to have done what is the cheapest DIY mod going. No need for coding or even disconnecting the battery. Cut out your cowl an dclip in the switch.

Check you have the wires - Pre Oct 04 build cars are prewired and as already said, easiest thing in the world to do :D

Easy enough to check for the wires - just take the lower steering column off and if you have this plug it is all easy:

I'm trying to talk myself into doing this job on my '07 Z4 3.0, which is going to involve installing the loom. I fancy my chances apart from the bit where I have to establish what pin goes where in the DME. Anyway, what I'd love to know is why BMW decided to stop pre-wiring post '04 cars. The optimist in me says that they were just trying to save a few pounds by not putting in pointless wiring, but I do wonder if it was a cynical decision in order to make retrofits harder...

Gannet,

what is that white one behind the one you are holding for?any ideas?
I would guess it is for the MFSW, it is plugged into something as the black plug was the only free one in my car :?

but I have mfsw and that one is not plugged into anything, and the buttons do work! could it for phone connections to the steering wheel?

maybe for the bluetooth loom ?!

I really am guessing here though - didn't take much notice of it to be honest :?
