Also just read the first bit about my kit costing the earth, although it wasnt cheap its also what I do for a living so for me worth the investment.
But all those pictures I have taken above were taken with an average DSLR. The Newcaslte pic was taken with a 350D and a bog standard 18-55mm kit lens and a cheap tripod that didnt really support anything lol! So completely entry level! Ive taken some of my best pics with cheap gear!
Reason being you have to work harder to get the results so that concentration, time and planning creates the best images.
The other 3 were taken with 40Ds which can be picked up for less than £300. Its the lenses that I use that are more expensive but you dont need epic gear as the pics above demonstrate. If you pixel peep then even 6k+ gear will still not satisfy.
I started off at 15 with a film 300V which was awesome! Then I got a 350D and bought some nice lenses then 2 40Ds (which one is still going strong) then a bronica ETRSI medium format camera, then bought a 5DMKII which took a plunge in Ullswater while I was shooting some canoeists for Outward bound. So I bought a 7D to fill as I was shooting a fair amount of motor sport and sport generally, pretty good value, then just before Christmas bought a 5DMKIII.
Can you take images with one you cant with another? No.
But tech does move on and clients are more demanding, and so am I of my equipment, they are tools for me not museum pieces so get banged paint off general charactor
I print more these days so resolution and quality is paramount. In this game any advantage is worth having. Used to be MP, then it was noise performance now the trend is dynamic range.
Whats most important is having a camera using it, practising and experimenting
If you dont have a camera on you you cant take pics. Best camera you have is the one you have with you
