Creaking clutch?

I'm in need of a bit of advice...

I have a 2006 - Z4 - 2.5si, which I've only had for 6 months and have had a creaking clutch for a while now - car's only done 56k miles

Taken it to BMW, they believe it may be the clutch springs, due to wear and tear etc...problem is they won't cover under warranty and proposed costs of approx £1000. :x

Obviously a bit miffed at having to fork out this kind of money for a car I've only had for a short while, but at the same time considering packing the whole thing in and getting a 3 series due to the hassle (boring!!!)...which I'll lose out on money anyway! :headbang:

I've not allowed them to open up the gearbox yet, as I'll get lumbered with the cost once they do so and may find further faults pushing the cost up.

Do you reckon there may be further underlying problems and get rid of the car before it costs more, or is this quite normal for a Z4 and once fixed should have an major problems in that line of things?

All the time, when in neutral, standing still...changing gear.

Not as loud when you drive due to the engine drowning most of it out, but standstill and when outside quite noticeable.

Even with the clutch pedal press down, dose this make the noise go away, if so could be the release bearing. The 3.0lsi suffers this but it only when its in neutral at a standstill its noticeable. I had a whole new gearbox, clutch and release bearing done on mine under warrenty only for the noise to come back a few weeks later. After which BMW declaire the noise to be normal. :tumbleweed:

can't see it needing a new clutch at 56k,

haven't yet been for another opinion, as I expected them to be slightly more accommodating...but he battle continues today! :x

i've heard numerous things prior to taking it in, could be the where the clutch pivot lies, thrust-out bolt, clutch springs...only problem is won't know until they open it up, which is the concern. £1000 estimate now could end up being £2500 knowing them!

the noise sort of starts when you're about 1/4 down and same point when it comes back up?!

today we'll see if they can take the car back and get a new vehicle without losing to much money.

but i do think from doing my own calculation that paying for the repairs may work out cheaper for now! :fuelfire:

Clutch creaks are common and often a simple case of lubricating parts of the release mechanism (or sometimes just the pedal bushes) problem being access. Looking at the BMW TIS manual it's a fair bet it's just a dry release bearing or lever, bad news is having to take out the box to get at it.

The snag in negotiating a repair is there is probably nothing wrong with the functioning of the clutch, it's just a bloody annoying noise to have on a recently acquired prestige car. If you like the car hold out for a repair or contribution to the cost. The trade will skin you on a returned vehicle after six months as they need to cover the prep', warranty and overheads on the deal and you end up paying this twice. Good luck.

Thanks!

I agree, there's no mechanical fault, loss of power or hinderence to the handling etc...

I've already said to them that expecting me to pay over £1k already is a bit much and would 'appreciate' a reasonable meeting point between both parties.

I do like the car, and would hate to trade it in because is so much fun to drive...and again the trade in is going to kill me!

Cheers for advise, lets see how I get on! :|

Surely they cant rule out warranty work if they still have to investigate further. I would try and get a second opinion as andy says.

You could probably ask for a good will contribution from BMW seeing as you only had the car six months if you do decide to go ahead with repairs.

We'll know what's happening by Monday afternoon hopefully.

Been trying to get hold of their service department since 10.00 and only just got through at 14.45, so they wasted a whole day of not doing anything to the car...

They're still waiting on the part to fix the phone system since yesterday, which went down as well...and I hope they fixed the catch on the bonnet so that I can open it! :|

They refuse to fix the iPod connector though, as apparently this was not factory fitted, however is a BMW fitted part. :poke:
