Creak from rear suspension when handbrake applied?

A question really, i've seen it mentioned on here occasionally that it's not particularly unusual for the rear suspension to creak when the handbrakes applied - i.e getting in and out of the car and mine certainly creaks! Last night it was really loud though, and even pushing down on the rear of the car meant I could replicate the noise easily - what's the cause of this? :(

I checked the springs to see of the bottom of either side was cracked / snapped a few weeks back and they're in good condition and intact.

Top mounts squawk when they are on their way out. One of the things to keep an eye out for on the rear

Mine did that until I stripped cleaned and lubricated the handbrake shoes. I think it was the shoes creaking where they are in contact with the back plate. Put a timy smear of copper grease on the contact points - nothing since :)

I agree with 'toolmanchris' have had to do this on previous BMW's also.

Cheers guys so it's either f*cked top mounts or handbrake shoes?

How do I go about greasing them? What needs to be stripped / removed?

If its the noise I am thinking of then its not the top mounts (Although without exactly hearing the noise I cannot say for definite). As I mentioned earlier I have experienced a creaking noise with previous BMW's and its been linked to the handbrake. It does not necessarily mean the hand brake shoes require replacing, however the moving parts linked to the handbrake mechanism may only require greased and lubricated as 'toolmanchris' mentioned.
To access the suspect parts you need to remove both rear brake discs, once removed the handbrake shoes and assembly components are accessible.

It would be defiantly worth while reading up the process before jacking the car up and getting started.

The noise may be linked to something else as Tom mentioned, just giving you some options before buying new parts when you may get away with a tub of copper grease for a few quid.

Cheers for the detailed response there. It doesn't happen when driving at all, only when getting in / out the car and pushing on the rear quarter. From a search on here it seems highly likely this is caused by the handbrake shoe and nothing really to be worried about.

When the rear brakes need changing i'll sort this too. Cheers
