Crashed my Z4 on the ice!

Hit a patch of ice this morning on the motorway at 50mph and ended up with the Z4 in a field, but I'm unhurt and the damage isn't too bad.

The rear wheels slid outwards sending me pointing towards the inside barrier. I pushed the clutch down and steered left, which moved me away from the barrier but sent me in an uncontrolable skid. I tried to adjust it but I ended up going across 3 lanes of motorway, over the hard shoulder and into a small field.

Had to get it pulled out and towed home. Immediate damage is looking like a puncture, scratches/hole in rear bumper, rear right parking sensor missing, and possibly damaged wheels. It's at a garage now for assessment.

Lesson learnt: Investing in winter tyres is a must.

Drive safe in the snow, folks!

Glad you are ok  the car can be fixed, although it might have more damage than you can see if its slid sideways up that curb (hope not).

Glad you're ok. That must have been a squeaky bum moment for sure! Hope the damage to the Zed isn't too bad and you get it back soon.

Sorry to hear this, but sounds like it could have been much worse!

Hope you get it sorted soon!
Winter tyres really are a must on any beemer, I learned that really quickly but I'm just leaving the Zed in the garage on cold/snowwy days... It's not worth the risk

Oh lord that's terrible! Glad your ok! I'm going to a friends tonight and the snow is bucketing down!

WInter tyres AND winter driving, since the former doesn't doesn't obviate the need for the latter!

The most important thing is you are ok... and from the pics the damage looks very little.. a bit of bodywork damage and maybe your alignment knocked out.

Also winter tyres while better wont help on ice.. accidents just happen.

Good luck with the repair.

Glad you are ok! Ice=ice no winter tyres can prepare you for it.. And once you loose the rear you can only hope to get it back under control.

Blimey; very pleased to hear you walked away. Good luck with getting it all sorted.

Don't think I can agree with that. If the car had winter tyres, it most likely would not have started that spin in the first place.

Feck - must have been scary on that bank, looks like the car went up on two wheels and back down as it stopped ? Glad you're ok, I have spun across 3 lanes of motorway before, and a laugh it is not...

Would have helped a little... but even with the best of winter tyres once you lose the rear at relatively high speed its almost impossible to control the outcome.

Agreed - the "once you lose it" bit, yes.

On pure ice, I can now drive the X5 on winters completely with full trust and full control, whilst on the summer tyres it would go all over the place.

Sorry to hear this.
Whats with pushing in the clutch when you lost it? :o
I understand steering into it, but removing drive takes away any control you may get away so your a passenger then.

Anyway, when these things happen quick as that theres little you can do

A lucky escape for the LOLkid
On the winter tyre debate i have to agree with pvr here . once you have sampled the qualities of a decent set of winter rubber you appreciate they are'nt just for forward motion in ice/snow . They really do perform well in braking & grip whilst in motion .
I would always have at least one vehicle in the household with them fitted from november  no point waiting until the day you need em

These were the best ive had http://tires.about.com/od/Tire_Reviews/fr/Review-Bridgestone-Blizzak-Ws-70.htm transformed our 5 tourer into 4x4 but like a fool sold them when i was BMWless for a while .

Glad your ok and must have been very scary :(

Yepp winter tyres are an absolute must, you only understand the benefits and safety they offer once you have them fitted.

Even with the all seasons on the Z3 I've been amazed on the grip available in snow and sheet ice, no drama. I would have been really struggling without them. The Vredestein Quatracs have been ace and have the snowflake symbol so can recommend them on a rear wheel drive :)

The people who go pah over fitting winter tyres and it's down to driver skill are talking nonsense as this unfortunate example shows.

Tim.
