CRAP PAINT FINISHES

As you can see from the Deapsea Blue paint discussion we have issues with how easily the paint is damaged by the environment. Are ther any other colours that suffer this way and has anyone found a good wax/sealer that helps?

I gave mine a good coat of Collinite 915 wax last week. I think the word on detailingworld.com is that Collinite 476 and 915 as well as FK 1000p are the most durable waxes you can get, meaning they will protect that bit more than other waxes. I have some patches of clearcoat dulling as a result of seagull $h1t but they are only really visible in certain lights and angles. I am worried about the "watermark" effects that people are talking about.

The word on detailingworld.com is also that the clearcoat/laquer on BMW's really needs a strong cutting compound to remove any defects on it.

So how much is the environment better off with this water based paint now all the chemicals are thrown at the other end of the process, i.e. to keep it decent and repair it?

Sapphire black!! Never known a car that marks so easy! Every time I clean the car I have more new stone chips! :?

Space Grey and I too have been surprised by the number of small chips showing in the paint. Maybe with have an issue building that needs BMW's attention?

I am sure it will all have been fixed by the time the M arrives :poke:

Havana is a 'mare too. Water marks are horrendous and loads of chips all along bonnet.

Mine is silver cant remember the colour name but yes it marks - I have just had an issue with the dealer and water spots all over the car. A few really annoying stone chips on the bonnet which I havn't been brave enough to have a go at yet. A bit dissapointing as | do look after my cars but this one seems to ignore the attention!

After three months and 7500 miles I have a fair number of chips, one nice cluster of three underneath the offside mirror, ricochet me thinks. Damage so far is greater than the Audi A4 I had for 2 years and 50,000 miles!

The week before my watermark incident my car had been clayed and machined polished. It was then given three hits of autoglym SRP followed by 2 hits of extra gloss protection (properly applied may I add).

The next day I topped it off with megs Ultimate detailer and it was left in the garage until the fatefull day it was left out over night and got wet then baked in the sun.

The water marks are like nothing I have ever seen in 25 years of car ownership. I never use aggresive compounds but even scratch X doesn't touch them. I know there are much more intensive compounds and polishing pads but I am not confident enough to try them.

Then again why should I have to. The car got a little rain and a little sun. No biggy surely :!:

Does anyone elses car have large water drops gathering on the bonnet (hood) around the washer jets after a wash or rain.

Bmw is notorious for having soft paint which easilly gets stone chips. On my Z3 and '03 Z4, I had so many stone chips regardless of how careful I was. I would stay back from trucks etc. When I got my '06 Z4, I did not drive it away from the dealer until I had the 3M clear bra installed. When I traded it in, it looked as good as new.

I don't know why when I took delivery of my '10 Z4, I did not opt to have the 3M applied. I drove my new car less than 100 miles and got my first stone chip on the front bumper. I immediately made an appointment to have the chip fixed and the 3M applied. My front bumper, 1/3 of the hood, and the backs of the mirrors are covered. You can barely see it unless you are on top of the car. Anyway, I can drive worry free on the highway now and I haven't got any more chips.

I don't have any water spots that you guys are talking about though.

Neither do I, although I must admit my car does live in it's garage all of the time when not driven, + no stone chips in 1660 miles

I've noticed water spots more on my M coupe recently although another wash gets rid of them in my case. I've just invested in one of these to alleviate the problem. I haven't tried it yet because it only came on wednesday. I've gone for the 30ppm version as I live in a hard water area.

You just use for your final rinse down. It says you won't need to dry but I probably will anyway.

It would seem that this poor paint/laquer issue is fairly widespread take a look at this:

Maybe BMW should be doing something about it - like paying for all current cars to be Scotchguarded!!!!!!!!

A very interesting point PVR.
The law of "Unintended Consequences"... :P

Mines was apparently "protected and sealed" by BMW. Still terrible blotches on paintwork
