Crank bolt direction

Hi im currently replacing the timing chain and tensioner on mu z4 2.0l 2006. Ive got as far as taking the crank bolt out but unsure of the thread, as in ìf its a normal thread or reverse. Ive looked on the bmw tis manual I acquired and doesnt look to say what way it goes so im assuming its a normal thread? The problem is we know what happens to assumptions haha If any one could help me be very grateful.

Cheers

It should be normal RH thread but generally crank bolts can be VERY tight and the crankshaft will need to be securely locked (I believe there is a tool but I'm sure a rod slotted in will work). TIS will have the re-torquing figure which will be huge and give a good clue as to why it's so hard to shift.

Just to clarify I've not done one on a beemer but it's fairly standard to other makes and will take huge effort (worrying amounts) to shift so long as you have the engine securely locked go at it with tube/breaker extensions and it should come free. Crank bolts are single use.

Brilliant yeah as I read on Manual it says the torque and about replacing it. It is 11 years old 100,000 miles and the original setting of the torque I guess its bound to be in there good and like you said about the worrying amounts of effort is the bit thats getting to me I think. I will get new bolt and then give a go with better gun or go down the route of a breaker bar and pole if need be.

I did get cam lock kit which has the key to lock the flywheel at TDC as reason for taking bolt out is to replace chain and tensioner.

I got the car couple weeks ago as non runner when looking over it notice the tensioner had split and could eaisly see the timing was out hence why I guess it wouldnt fire up. All the coils work and engine turned just didnt carry on the cycle.

Cheers for reply :)
