Cracked my windscreen

Washed my car today the screen was warm/hot and the sponge was cool result is a cracked screen

Filled out the direct line, auto glass online form and will see if I can contact then before next Saturday when they are due to replace it. With ref to quality of parts used.

The national windscreen replacement companies like Autoglass, National Windscreens etc say they use OEM parts which are copies and not original equipment screens etc. Most insurance companies allow you to choose who to go to get your screen replaced but for a higher excess charge. I have a crack in the screen of my E89 and am having it replaced at a BMW dealer for a £50 increase to the usual excess on my policy. I do have to pay the bill and then claim back the cost but the quote has been pre-authorised so I expect to be reimbursed pretty quickly.

I’ve had problems in the past with Autoglass in that distortions in the glass of the screens they’ve fitted have necessitated them being changed again - always blamed on a bad batch!

Ignore the need for the windscreen but go for the oem seal if you can. If you're not that fussy, a pattern part trim will be fine.

Why would you ‘ignore’ the opportunity of obtaining a Genuine BMW screen when the excess is the same.

I didn't once say ignore your advice, but if you want to get upset about that then go ahead. I've had 5 windscreens in my Z4 since owning it and the only bad quality one was a Saint gobain windscreen which was awful for scratches. All the others were perfectly fine.

I had mine replaced and they used some generic "by the foot" seal. Looks horrible. I may take it in and see if the seal can be swapped out for the real thing. (Pardon the cr@ppy paint job overspray. It was wrecked before I got it and they got the least that money can buy)

I drive my Z4 daily down a main arterial route into London, plenty of hgv's and debris on the road, but you choose to make up stories to benefit your own agenda forums are funny places sometimes.

That's terrible :lol: the trim you need comes in one piece with 3 sides. Both the oem and pattern parts look the same, but the pattern part ones usually split in the top corners.

You should be having them re-do that with proper trim. That’s not fit for purpose. If there’s even a pinhole gap in the screen sealant way are can get in and then go anywhere. We had a badly fitted windscreen in our old daily and it fucked the electrics behind the dash. Took a lot of effort - and a new windscreen - to sort.

As for the BMW windscreen debate, if you can get one with the sticker that’s great but it can be a pain trying to persuade them to do it in my experience. I agree with Ben that having them supply and fit OEM trim is the important bit. I got a genuine BMW marked windscreen once by accident, plus OEM trim. I was well chuffed... then less than a week later after heavy rain a GTR kicked up a rock and cracked it

Autoglass have just finished fitting the new screen it looks all ok he fitted a new trim and due to it being folded up in a bag it needs to settle a nice warm day should sort that it is just 30mm in each corner.

Have them coming to do mine next week (exact same situation as you, nearly in the exact same place!)

I've requested OE glass but they said they can't guarantee they'll be able to get it (& are checking with my insurance that it'll be covered) - what glass did they end up providing just out of interest?

I'm not a stickler for it being OE so if they can't get it, it's too expensive or they can't get it quick enough then I'll be taking what they give me - just want to know it's half decent! It's not OE glass at the moment, and it's been fine thus far - taken a few hits and no chips yet, doesn't scratch either - I took the seal off and there's a chip under the seal that looks like it's probably happened when the seal has been replaced at some point.

The fitter that came out to me was understanding and explained the does and don’ts
The trim that covers the seal is an Autoglass part he showed me the bag with it in
When fitted it looked better than the old one as in it looks new fit wise it needs to sit in the sun for a bit to loose its shape from the bag
