Cracked Manifold URGENT help.

Shocking! My exhaust manifold went on my 2.0 last year. Thankfully it was replaced with no problem whatsoever. This was BMW in Exeter. Not sure if they would carry any stock.

They hardly seem to stock service parts, not a chance with something like this.

Hi guys

Just been talking to BMW myself in Belfast as my warning light came on last week. They are checking if on Monday but mentioned that if it needed a new manifold it would be 6 months as the part is not in stock. He also mentioned he has another 2.0 z4 that has been there for a month now still waiting for a new manifold. He said it was a common fault on the z4 and 3 series that use the same 2 litre engine! Surely they shud be fixing this under extended warranty as a faulty part!

I have also only had my car for 3 - 4 months but bought it from a private dealer not sure if I have any come back?

My exhaust manifold was diagnosed this week with a hair line crack, but mines a 3.0. I am also sharing your pain, hope you get it fixed real soon.

Well, now been waiting 8 weeks for a new exhaust manifold from BMW, this is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for a spare part from a manufacturer.

Sounds like a group letter / or single letter - being sent to BMW hq is needed?

Perhaps we should all complain to BBC Watchdog, Ann Robinson would soon sort BMW out, she puts the fear of God into me!!
I'm not joking, it might just work!

Another update. Had to return the dealers courtesy car today and BMW haver provided one of their vehicles initially until 01/07 :headbang:
Dealer repeated again "The part may be in before then" but this a total PITA as i have a parking permit and the whole thing is now just a hassle. To top it off the replacment car is an estate!! Lovely and everything but not exactly the first choice i would have had :(

I spoke to my boss today about this problem he is very handy with the welder. If you guys can't get a fix we would be happy to weld them up if its needed. No idea on price but not much PM me if I can help out. We are not mechanics so I don't really want to be taking them off!!

Amazing offer Mat. And one that folk may just take you up on
It's hard to believe this is such an issue. It cannot be an unknown issue to BMW.

I find it hard to believe. If there is a fault with them and they crack that's fine these things happen on cars? But to stop production and not have spares available seems very odd to me.

I am happy to help out. But i should also say this isn't a particularly specialist thing. Any good local garage should be able to help and know someone locally to help. My offer is really for the home mechanic or if you are struggling. Obviously happy to help anyone out its what places like this are for.

I suspect they are cast Luke.

As for the camera yeah that one way. We make vacuumed chambers at work and we have to make sure there are no leaks we talking a bigger vacuumed than space. Pug the holes pump it down check where the leak is using helium..

Thanks for the offer Mat, as I understand it, welding may not be as straight forward as people think. Talking to Dave Bensten of St Ives in Cambridgeshire, he has tried welding these cracks up before. Although the weld itself is successful, the process causes stress in the nearby metal and a crack appears there shortly afterwards.
Has anybody got a picture or photograph of the manifold, I understand there are two different ones fitted on these cars. Someone has told me the catalitic converter is integral with the manifold, but I find that hard to believe.

I thought they would be.

I would offer help too but I've had a few runnings with cast and they haven't been too successful! :( unless you have some cast rods I found it a PITA! Weird though, as strong as cast is, weld it normally and it almost disintegrates! Heating it worked better but it's got to be cooled pretty slowly otherwise 'crack, crack!'

I find this baffling, the normally aspirated BMW engine produces nothing special by way of heat, pressure or stress, the manifold designs are pretty standard and use no exotic materials, so how the hell are they having these problems on low mileage well maintained units? I do admire the way BMWs perform but this sort of unnecessary fragility reminds me of the issues with boggo basic things like rear springs breaking up, cracking alloys, roof motors, window regulators etc

You just don't get these issues with something like a Honda so why can't BMW get these basics right?

Yeah it is a pain and it needs to be warmed up to de stress it first. You then use cast filler rods and tig welding it seems to work better.

Have you asked how they done it Mike? It might be because they didn't warm it up enough or cooled it to quick or not at all?

Mat
