Cracked alloys

Daughter has a 61 plate Z4 23i s highline with the standard 19inch wheels.

She went yesterday to have two new run flats fitted to the rear wheels.
When the tyre shop removed the first one they found serious cracks in the alloy . They then checked the other one without taking it off the car and that was also badly cracked. The car has covered 20k and was serviced at her BMW dealer less than two weeks ago! The tyre shop naturally refused to proceed with the fitting and BMW assistance was called.
The car is now with the dealers and will not be examined until after the New Year holiday. They have provided a hire car so no problem on that score. I find it hard to believe that these carjack were not picked up on the service, especially when they advised that new tyres were required and there was only 20% left on the rear pads and they suggested replacing discs and pads!! When the wheel was off yesterday the pads / discs were examined and were perfect......as you would expect after only 20k. As they Also did not reset the service indicator or top up the washer bottle I wonder if the actual did more than just change the oil! ( it was a no cost service under the BMW service plan )

Anyway the reason for My post is to Bring this fault to the attention of other owners and find out if this has happened to others? Will post again when the car has been examined and report the outcome.

Cheers

Tom

Hello and Welcome. Cracked alloys are sadly not unusual and much discussed on here. Some styles seem more prone to this than others. Do you know the style number?

Hi Tadpole and welcome to the forum.

Style 296 cracking is a very common problem, particularly on the rears, about a year or so ago the wheel was modified and reinforced to cope with our roads. Your dealer will complete an out of roundness check but will try and weasel out of replacing them under warranty. Be firm and threaten further action etcetera. Good luck and get your daughter to join the forum, there are very few of us girls here :D

Tom, this is a widely known issue unfortunately, I have had three crack... Don't get me started on what I think about this..

While its not been a money pit (other than cost of tyres). It has been the worst quality car I've owned.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Thanks for the prompt replies, and for not telling me off for doing a poor search!
I only searched the wheel and tyres section and found very little.

Wow this really is a can of worms judging by the amount of info on the web.

Will print off info for daughter to use as ammunition next week.

I am more annoyed now knowing that it is a well known problem with the 296 alloy.
They cannot have inspected the alloy when the car was in for service two weeks ago and to my mind that is negligence and has put my daughter in danger.
Will update as soon as I know anything.

Again many thanks for the replies.

Tom

Are you going to name the dealer?
I expect they will say the cracks could have happened in the last couple of weeks but they can't get out of the things they missed and wrongly advised on the service :driving:

I am suspect of the service pack too, as much as I love my local dealer, I think the fact the car gets services less now that my 6 series got serviced when that didn't have a service pack....

I'm sure your daughters car has the 296 wheels. I have had 4 crack in my first year of ownership. Dealer paid for one, I paid for one and two were changed under warranty.

Got 326 M Sports now, with no problems. Even after some very very memorable potholes!!

Hi, welcome to the forum!

Any pictures of the cracked alloys, the Z4 and/or the daughter?! We like pictures here... :)

Hope it gets sorted ASAP!

Hi. I have had my Z4 since new and it is now almost two years old. Due to its low mileage it has just had its first service. Needless to say the dealer has found a cracked rear wheel and yes they are 19" 296 type alloys. The mileage is just under 12,000 miles!!
This vehicle is now"off the road" and parked up at the dealers whilst I am driving a loan car supplied.
The wheel is due to be replaced this week and the cracked wheel will be sent away for warranty purposes.
I have expressed my concerns to the service desk about the other wheels due to the safety issue also bearing in mind the warranty period expires in one years time (apparently).
I also know of another local Z4 owner and I recall that she too had one or more of ther alloys replaced due to cracks.
I will update in due course.

What's up Andy? Did you get wee over the front of your trs again? :poke:

It's not good is it. Great looking wheels, which are shite.....

Just annoys the hell out of me when stupid problems which should not happen to a 'premium' brand name seem to happen again and again, which obviously pi$$es the customer off.

I'll say this in a PC way... ownership of these cars is far from a Premium experience... ownership comes at a high premium that's for certain, and for me at least service is premium and (some) of the materials are premium, but it simply does not all add up to premium for me... Fast looking at other brands or models...
