Well to conclude my argument for a manual, thinking honestly it's only in motorway jams that crawl as a start/stop that I wish I had an auto. At all other times I much prefer a manual. Either is a compromise in one way or another but for 95% of the time my personal priorities make a manual the easy winner. YMMV...

Most top performance cars have dual clutch dsg boxes not old fashioned autos.

Modern decent autos are very good now at what they are designed to do but it's still more fun to be the one actually actuating those changes.
Seen as hes looking at a coupe its an old type of auto so the manual would be faster.

Cruise in an auto will shift gears for you if you hit a steep incline and maintain your steady speed. If you are changing gear manually iwith cruise on then what is the point?
I used to think along the same lines as you that autos are for old farts and fat lazy arses but once I actually owned one it won me over straight away. Hard to explain but it just feels a bit more luxury and you get a nice feeling of being cared for and kept safe by the machine. Kinda cool.

How many auto drivers put their car in park when sat in traffic...? It's just as easy to apply the handbrake anyway.
Unless it's a really steep incline then the 3.0 takes care of it. The point of being able to change gear is that you can and it won't affect your cruise control setting. The point of using it is to maintain a steady speed not attain one. As aforementioned the engine will deal with the vast majority of situations where cruise will be used. I've yet to come across a motorway that needed a downshift. Country roads you're either stuck behind someone who is not doing a constant speed or you're accelerating and braking as the road flows...
I can see that an auto suits your driving style as you prioritise luxury over sportiness and involvement, which is fine, but I bought the Z4 for its abilities as a sports car.

I wanted a manual, and was the same as most, its not really driving unless its manual....
An Auto in the right colour, right year, right mileage came up 5 miles from me, drove it, loved it, bought it.
I use the paddles alot on non mundane roads/drives out....although you need them less with the sport button engaged, the use of both and you can rev the ass off her

I drove both, much prefer the auto and yes barely ever use the paddles. I do occasionally punch sport mode though
