Coupe in for some warranty work

So after my last service BMW confirmed there was an oil leak coming from the bell housing area (I noticed a little oil if my car was parked for a few days, but did not get chance to get under for a look). They also confirmed that they too could here a whine coming from the engine which increased in pitch/ frequency with engine RPM.

So I dropped it off on Thursday morning for investigative work. I politely showed them the Mondial Warranty policy and made it clear that with Fully Comp i expected any oil leaks and gaskets to be covered. Luckily despite the service rep saying no, their workshop manager confirmed that any "sealed component" would be covered.

They then handed me the keys to a brand new 5 series (520d) auto.. cannot complain at all! must say I have fallen in love with the shear ease and comfort of the 5 series. They didn't called me back until this morning, they said they wanted me to take the car out with a technician to confirm the whine noise.

During the test drive I pulled up under a bridge, revved up to 3Krpm and clear as day I could hear the whine. The technician kept saying that it was normal. (I do not beleive it, almost sounds like the noise you get when in reverse gear).

Back at the garage they proceed to give me my car back, I ask about the oil leak, they say it was just excess oil. I challenged it, luckily the Workshop manager appeared and said the gearbox seal needed replacing! if I had not challenged it I would have never have known!

Bottom line, I keep the 5 series for another 3-4 days, the coupe is having its gearbox removed and the seal replaced. Workshop manager says they will replace the gearbox oil with a new grade (auto gear box oil apparently that is supposed to help with a better feel on manual boxes).

So Although I have to pay a £100 excess I think my warranty has probably paid for itself! they told me I would need to pay for the oil re-fill, but looking at the Warranty booklet it does state oil is included so I will have to debate that on the day.

In other news the effortless driving of the 5 series has me wondering whether I should consider an E90 330D... best of both worlds maybe? think i would miss the Z4 shape too much though.

I find I've always got to challenge them as they try and hand the car back without saying anything!

I would think if they are draining the oil from the gearbox then you shouldn't have to pay to replace it. Just being chancers as usual.

amazes me how you have to fight for what should just be done without question

I'll never trust dealers with any issue.

Two years ago I noticed a small oil drip under my car (Astra not Z) in the office car park, now I didnt know if it was from mine or another car. I dropped it off a few days later for a service and mentioned the oil and asked them to take a look.

I got a phone call saying that the Oil Pump was knackered. The total estimate was £960+VAT. It was the week before xmas, so I asked how desperate it was. The mechanic said it will go through a lot of oil without changing it but if I kept an eye and topped up when needed I could probably carry on for a few months.

Two years later I've never had a problem, or had to top up the oil between services and haven't noticed a single leak....untrustworthy, dishonest, chancers imo

The thing I like least about main dealers is their reluctance to let you talk to the people who are actually doing the work - you were lucky to get the workshop manager. The service receptionists don't seem to have a clue about cars :(

Just as well you wee firm with them

I have to laugh when people sing the praises of the dealer like they employ superhuman technicians my personal experience is that there are as many chancers and dimwits working with dealers as anywhere else

I had a 530D in for some warranty work before heading on a long weekend to the Scottish Islands picked the car up later than it should have been and had to head straight for the ferry. On the Sunday before heading back home I happened to flip the lid to put water in the washers - and found all the. Engine covers were missing along with pollen filters etc. how it passed final inspection before signing off was beyond me

Worst of all was they couldn't find the parts when I went back in the Monday - another three days. With. A replacement car before it was finally back to the way it should

I think the inflated dealer prices are to cover their in efficiency fancy show rooms and running replacement cars rather than paying for professional trained and competent technicians

Not impressed as you can tell lol

Cheers guys

Over all I am not massivley impressed, they just didnt seem to know what had or had not been done to the car. I suspect it had sat there for two days and was stuck on the ramps for a quick 30 minute inspection.

As for the whining noise, if anyone has a 3.0Si in the Stoke or Stafford area let me know as I would appreciate a listen of a another vehicle. In my head it sounds as if one of the tensioner pulleys has a noisey bearing, may get my local independant to have a listen.

On the plus side of all this, I get to keep the top spec 5 series for another 4 days which has saved loads of miles on the Z4 (I have done 500 miles in the 5 series since last Thursday) and its a bit better on fuel than the Z4 (getting about 51mpg from the 5 series).

As the car is approaching 60K miles I am not sure whether I will keep the Mondial warranty or not, costing me £39 a month, started paying last April. I guess it has just about paid for itself with this gearbox off job?

It's worrying to hear tales like these, 2 of the BMW's in our household have had issues that the dealer claimed fixed (and only said they'd look at a few issues when threatened with legal action)

Please feel free to post videos doing burnouts and doughnuts in the 5 series. :P

 I have given it a good thrash now and then, however it feels like a barge compared to the Z4 and whilst it is planted, I do feel a little disconnected from the road.

Also with their loan cars there is a £500 excess which I really do not want to risk incurring! in a new 5 series just a scratch will probably cost that to fix.

Update

Got a call today from the Garage.

They confirmed that they had replaced the gasket and carried out a full oil change on the gearbox. I do not know what oil they have used but they inform me that it is a modified grade compared to the original spec.

They also dropped in the conversation that they have replaced the clutch as the clutch plates got contaminated with oil. I was pleasantly surprised by this as it is all covered under warranty and means I have a nice new clutch as well as a gearbox oil change. Also happy because over the past few months I have noticed when cold that there is a severe rattle/ vibration when setting off on an incline. It does not really happen when warm so am hoping that this was simply the clutch slipping a little in the morning on the fresh oil, and once warmed up I would guess most of the oil would have been removed.

So after a shaky start it seems to be turning out pretty well for me, and I still have the 5 series to rack up miles on (have to drive to Yorkshire tomorrow on business), untl Friday morning.

Another update.

Was supposed to pick the car up tomorrow morning, however got a call from the garage. During the cold start test the lambda sensor (and possiby another sensor) have flagged up faults.

Therefore they are being replaced under warranty, at least they are being thorough.

New gearbox main seal, new gearbox oil, new clutch, new lambda sensors, dont mind if they want to replace anything else whilst its in :-)
