Coupe gremlins - display fades and rattle from hatch

Afternoon All

Recently started a new job, so now using the car everyday, rather than occasional weekend use. Although this is much more fun than the train, I'm also seeing/hearing a few more niggles.

Firstly, this morning the display panel below the speedo (was showing mpg at the time) faded to black. At the same time the "M" lights rounds the rev counter did the same thing. 30 seconds of blackness and they all came back on, yet everything else kept working, radio, speedo, car! Anybody seen this. Could be a one off?

Secondly, this is one for the coupe owners. I've got a really irritating noise coming from the rear of the car. I've had the springs recently replaced under warranty and I took the wheels off last weekend, and they are still fine so it's not them. I am thinking it's either the hatch, which although shut might be moving around on the catch, or rear damper top mounts. It specifically happens when I go over speed bumps in car parks, or when the road surface is bumpy etc. A loose hatch seems plausible, and there have been two previous posts about it, but no reports of a successful fix. Could it be damper mounts - car's done 25k miles?

Cheers

I've had the dimming dash lights as you describe - maybe twice since I've owned the car.

Never did get to the bottom of it :(

Can't help with the latter problem but I've had this darkening of the display once too. You can actually induce it by covering the little light sensor near the headlight switch - it automatically darkens the display and re-brightens after a short interval once you expose it to light again. The one time it happened to me I don't know why it did it as I don't think I'd covered the sensor up.

Hatch--mine rattled. Dealer took off the plastic liner, added felt tape and reassembled. Helped a lot.

Dash lights dimming is a common issue and as gannet said nver got to the bottom of it, happend on both my 3 series as well. It must have something to do with the light sensor on the light switch IMO

Guys

Thanks - I'll chalk up the dash lights fading to black as a one off. The hatch rattle really is irritating though, so I think some investigating work will be done this weekend. I'll post my findings.

As for the coupe being perfect - I disagree, it's anything but perfect, but that's why I like it.

This has happened to me on a few occasions , dimmed again today noticed the radio light also dimmed lasted some 30 seconds , tried holding my finger over the light sensor adjacent to the switch , however the dash lights did not dim as much as with the dimming 'fault' , has anyone ever got to the bottom of this idiosyncrasy, :?

The Battery seems to be OK, ie the starter turns the engine over briskly when starting, however, if my battery is a bit dodgy, im sure the winter will show up weaknesses.

I also had a rattle from the boot lid. Dealer adjusted it and it almsot stopped. Sadly the only way it would then close was by slamming it shut. I readjusted it myself and now seems fine.

on the way to the north yorkshire meet my dash lights also dimmed :? i've just put it down to one of those things which seem to happen but no one knows why.

Also had the dimming, very infrequently and the battery is very new so would be suprised if it was that :)

I had it again today, and my battery is new. Might be that it doesn't like short journeys with aircon etc blaring.
