I'd have to agree unfortunately as a chap who on occasions finds himself driving the girlfriends bug vert - complete with angels hanging from the rear view. On sunny days it can be a dilema as to whether I grin and bear the heat or grin and bear the additional attention/shame of dropping the top. I almost feel compelled to shout to anyone who looks that my real car is a proper car and non of this convertible rubbish....

It's right tho. In the coupe every Tom dick (head) and Garry wants a race which is most amusing. Only this morning after dropping my son off at school a vectra wanted a race off the lights. I love revving the engine and creeping forward only to let them razz off like the appendages that they are when the light goes green as I gently pull away. This morning was particularly amusing as vectra (who was too busy looking at me in the rear view) had to slam on moments later when the chap in front turned right whilst I and several others glided gently by.
On the same stretch of road going the otherway it goes from two lanes to one just under a bridge where the police are known to congregate. A chap in a special golf made it his lifes ambition to pass me one morning and I gently upped the speed to match his and as it got beyond what was legal I backed off at the pinch point so he went flying past on the wrong side of the road in front of the coppers who pulled us both (so I thought). The copper walked past me saying no mate it's that t*t we need a word with not you. Off I went having a good old chuckle whilst he got the riot act. Churlish I know but hey ho.

It's not quite the same here in Germany. Here, I'd say 90% of drivers are always at 100% max effort driving. If I leave a traffic light at anything less than 60% of what my 3.0si can do. I get left behind. I know that I can out run a fair majority of cars. But, It feels like a F1 start every time you leave a stop light.
Even the Dolts in smart cars and prius', along with white vans with ladders hanging about, Will always leave a light with their right foot firmly pressed to the floor running to red line before every shift.
I suppose I shouldn't complain though. It's a lot better than driving in the USA.

Going off on a tangent, we have a road near us (its got proper tarmac n stuff on it, not just dirt!). Traffic lights with a short sprint, then goes into one lane
and there is a left hand turn off of it. Why do all the Richard Craniums insist on trying to launch of the lights and then slam on their brakes to turn left instead of forming an orderly queue in the left hand lane.
My better half takes great delight in pulling slightly ahead then slowing so they are left out to dry and miss the turning.
Although only having a ROADSTER with 4pots (oh the shame(the engine size, not the fact its a roadster)) we don't burn of many cars and prefer to embarrass them on the twisties instead

The fact that you had clarify for us that the engine size shames you and not the choice of body style is telling...

I dont think I have had any negative driving againsy me yet, although of friends of my reckoned iwould in abmw! In fact I have only ever had v positive attention, second only to the kit car I used to have. I used to come up behind people on country lanes and they would just pull over and let me past, some guy even let me ot of a junction when he was on the main road and there was no other traffic around!
i was on a 2 lane carriageway and i passed this guy in a chavved up corsa (the usual black with black windows) slowly as he had had to slow down as the guy in front was turning left, then he accelerated alongside me only to slam on the brakes when he reached the car in front of him to show of to his dodgy looking chavvy bird in the Passenger seat. Maybe he was showing his new bird his brakes and illustrating what he spent his giro on this week !
Conversely(?), I've found that driving the Z has made me worry less about being "out-done". My previous car was a Focus-ST and I felt a bit like I had a point to prove every time I drove it - the good thing about the Z is that everyone knows how quick it is just from looking at it - so I'm happy just to pootle along at slow(er) speeds (most of the time).

I've only had 2 people attempt to race me months ago when I had only just got the car. People are very courteous most days, only on a rare day to people seem to be jealous of me enjoying the top-down functionality and not let me out / in. Comments from people have actually surprised me, many very nice comments. I was expecting the BMW badge to put most people off.

You relax when you've got 340 ponnies under the right foot I thought the car was more discreet than a convertible, especially in its grey colour until my girlfriend told me that everyone looks at it as it passes by (she was in a mates Boxer S behind at the weekend - she refuses to get in mine as its too uncomfortable). Can't say I noticed because the car is too low and I can only see their boobs...her I mean chest.
Honestly, I think the coupe has such classical shape with modern creases that few cars have now days and its all the more striking because of it.
Still to be fair to ragtop owners, must be great to hear that engine outside. Its just that it looks more...ordinary perhaps?

Haha, it was actually "Performance Blue" - so in fairness it blended in to the uninitiated. Used to be nice taking on (and beating) folks in mid-powered Audis, BMWs, Mercs, etc.
Would never have taken on a Z mind - except maybe the 2.0
