Council MOT

Been reading up on the use of Council run MOT centers due to the fact that while they carry out MOT's but do not do repairs so no exaggerated faults.

Has anyone tried these places
 
Not personally, but a collegue always takes his to our local council and waits whilst they test it, he has tried other places like KwikFit and other MOT stations but swears by the council. As you say they do not do repairs, so no need to exaggerate faults.
 
Id be interested to know a bit more about this, given my recent run-in with Kwik-Fit...
 
I always use a local MOT only place. As said above they have no interest in failing the car as they don't do any repairs.
 
Yep, councils do taxi's, police, gas etc.. I had mine done at a BT fleet garage.

Same deal, MOT and no blag, saw a police car, 2 British gas vans and a ambulance estate there at the same time..
 
Another here for using the council. I have been using Cardiff Councils workshops for the past 6 years and have no problem in recommending.

As mentionned above - there is the added bonus of total impartiality as they dont have the ability to act on any issues.

I used to always use a local garage for MOTs but got fed up of needing repairs on just about every visit. Since swapping to weonlymot (Lincoln branch) 3 years ago, both of my cars have sailed through first time, every time. Coincidence? :roll:
 
The counter argument is that the councils are absolute sticklers for testing to the letter. Just as likely to be failed there as anywhere.

Strangely I take the opposite view to many on MOT's. As I run well maintained cars I like a strict and thorough MOT's andI wish in many ways it were stricter to take garbage off the roads. Sort out poorly fitted aftermarket hid's, etc. And bottom line ensure the cars around me can stop and steer properly in an emergency.
 
But it's the council! I don't have 4 hours to waste while three dudes stand around looking at my car doing a risk assessment for an hour before deciding it's tea break time then spending another half an hour putting the car on the ramp before going on their lunch for an hour and a quarter then coming back to spend another couple of hours before failing it on a bulb cos they don't keep any parts and aren't qualified to carry out repairs.

Ouch, guess you have had some bad experiences with council workers in the past :o I can't speak personally for your council's workers or MOT testers, but from what I have heard about our council it takes no longer than any other test station to perform an MOT. Also the council doesn't do repairs as previously stated so why would you expect them to carry parts?

BTW I too also work for the council, but I certainly don't consider myself in the above category you mentioned, thank you :)

Was meant as humour - obviously not good enough. Will try harder next time.

However, I have worked for a council and now work in the private sector and I can tell you there is some truth in there! :poke:
 
Work for the council or employed by the council.
Know a lot that are employed but no many that work :lol:
Seriously I've heard lots of good things about council MOTs.
 
News to me. I usually hate MOT time as all the kwik fit type places will always find some bullshit fault and the indies charge too much due to their hourly rates.

Big section on Council MOTs on moneysavingexpert.com, lots of positives and just found out that my local ones is 2 minutes walk from my office :thumbsup:
 
got my two cars done for the past two yrs, great service, booked time, done in one hour and can chat to them while they are doing it. cant recommend enough, only needed headlights adjusting and they did this for me!
 
found my local on and booked in for the 17th,,, this was the closest they could do it.. not due till oct so no worries for me.. will see how we get on.

The strange thing is the girl on the desk said it was 39£... i looked on the dvla website and that says 54.85£ anyone know what the price is as garages quote different prices to entice you in
