Could my roof problems be caused by an old battery?

I'm getting the "roof movement impaired" message - anyone tracked this down to needing a new battery? Or is that a red herring?

You could try giving it a soak on a Ctek.

It’s a complex car with lots of electrical haberdashery, charging the battery fully could solve some issues. Have you tried a volt meter across the terminals? See what the reading is/ look up what it should be. That would be the place to start with this, if you think the battery is part of the problem.

It’s likely some wiring or a microswitch in the boot.

If so, the repair will be £2-300 ish. Not too bad.

Two trains of thought here....

1 - If it's the original battery (there's a date stamp on the negative terminal post) and its more than 5 years old then it's a good bet to change it. Saying that I've not come across many roof issues from a failing battery, certainly in this type of fault.
2 - Get a code reader on it and see what it says. I'd be going this route first really as its more than likely pointing to a failing microswitch (Hall sensor).

Does this fault warning come up at any particular spot in the roof movement?

It’s possible….how does it operate after a run with the engine running?

Old batteries are never a good idea on E89s for many reasons..

Broken wire or duff mechanical switch somewhere, first step code reader.
Buy good brand, worth it's weight in gold. Can't work on a modern car without one.
My Foxwell reader has been used a lot for all sorts.

Thanks everyone - appreciate your posts.

Firstly the battery seems to be stamped 2013 so it's the original - will get a new one

I have it hooked up to a Ctek now but suspect thats not the issue

What Foxwell do I need? I have an NT301 (the most basic one) but it's showing no error codes

The error on the dash has only come up once because since then the roof has been stuck in an unlatched position - the boot lid is in position, the front part of roof is in position, but the rear part where the screen is can be lifted by hand so currently only held down by gravity

Any attempt to open or close the roof now throws the same error on the dash

I've managed to get in the boot using the fuse box hack but the windows are stuck open
