Could it get any worse? Roof motor flood to add to my list.

Just had bad news from BMSport regarding what I was hoping was just an electrical glitch that happened on Sunday. Mid way through a drive I noticed that the indicators didn't appear to be working, nor the headlights. When I got home I realised the roof was stuck down, the radio and central locking also started playing up etc etc. Turns out that (following washing the car that day) the roof motor has been badly flooded by a blocked drain. Absolutely gutted and can't believe the timing - given the catalogue of failures I've had in the last 6 months clearing the drain was top of my list of bank holiday tasks and I've even been out and bought the axle stands and a length of tube for the vacuum cleaner mod :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

So I'm looking at 5 hours of labour + a new motor (does that sound about right?). I just hope that the other electrical failures aren't something even more major that has broken as a consequence of the shorting out of the motor.

May 2013: Roof motor flooded, unknown other electrical issues TBC
April 2013: Two brake pressure sensors failed within 2 weeks of each other
March 2013: Airbag left side satellite failure (replaced with a unit from a breakers, but it can't be coded to the car so still an issue)
Feb 2013: Both rear springs replaced as broken
Nov 2012: Steering column sudden and total failure requring total replacement
March 2012: Bought the car

This is quickly adding up to around what the car is worth. And since the steering issue I've done under 3000 miles. Unreal. Really don't know whether to cut my losses and sell or whether I'm now all set for years of trouble free motoring :cry:
 
Mate i feel for you! I have had a few problems with mine as well. There is a how to on hear describing how to fit it yourself. Sometimes the motor can be saved!
 
That a long and grim list matey , I hope you have a couple of years of trouble free motoring to enjoy soon
 
:cry: That's some list of faults, hopefully the roof motor can be saved and then you can look forward to some trouble free motoring for a while
 
Good and bad news - the roof motor has been resurrected once dried off and apparently all is fine there now.

However the simultaneous wiping out of the various electrics (in particular headlights, indicator tick sound, dashboard functions, "DISABLED" message on the stereo etc etc) are proving elusive even for the guys at BMSport. The whole can bus system is down so no way to read faults via OBD :thumbsdown:

Has anyone ever had that sort of failure before? I've found some similar tales on the E46 forums related to high humidity in the States but they generally seem to clear themselves. The only errors I was able to read were from the instrument cluster module (presume this is directly linked to the OBD?). None of the other modules can be found.

135 K bus: Error frequency 40, short circuit to ground, error present
190 Light module EEPROM error: Open circuit, error present


EDIT: Update - just spoke to them again. They have narrowed down the K bus issue to the airbag system - every time they connect it it brings down the whole K bus - but it's not really clear what's wrong. Will try putting the old (faulty) left satellite sensor back in just in case the breakers yard unit is infested with gremlins but seems like a long shot. :|
 
Have a read of my problems since owning the car for 18 months - unbelievable. Will be selling shortly and getting a reliable car!

The list goes something like:

Rear springs
Exhaust manifold replaced (emissions light on)
Oil leak (gasket replaced)
New vacuum pump
New windscreen wiper motor
Car broke down - needed new fuel injector
Rear parking sensor failed (fixed myself)
New catalytic converter!! (emissions light on)
and yesterday..... emissions light on again and needed new oxygen sensor

All in all, totalling it up.... with labour, prob about £3k worth. Absolutely shocking. Thank god I bought the BMW warranty and extended it this year.
 
Reading lists like the above make me feel really guilty. I hope this one is the last of your problems.
