I had a "proper" white one too Pondy!

Mine was C88 MEG (original number plate from DVLA). Last time I saw it was parked on road on a really horrible estate with flat tyres. That was at least 25 years ago, though.
Mine was a 'C' reg too. It was nicked from a pub car park in '91 or '92. I had it chipped and had thrashed the arse off it by then. Fastest thing on the A13.... I replaced it with a red later version.

I had a MK2 Escort RS2000 and a couple of 2.8 Injection Capris back in the 80s, so was definitely a bit of a Fast Ford fan.

I always wanted an RS500 in Moonstone but by the time I could nearly afford one in the 90s they were uninsurable. :(

Some years later a mate organised a track day on the Silverstone GP circuit and took 5 cars along including a Sapphire Cosworth in Moonstone that I found really disappointing. It was hard to keep it "on song" with terrible turbo lag, and then after a couple of laps it blew it's head gasket!

His XR4i might not have been as quick but was just so much better to drive.

I've since reached the conclusion that 80s cars were fine in the 80s but I really wouldn't want one now, which is just as well as that RS500 sold for more than I paid for my house in 2022! :o

My mum wanted a Capri in the early 70s but my dad put his foot down and came home in a new Hillman Avenger, metallic dark brown with a black vinyl roof

I remember at work in 1986 a colleague had a MK1 Fiesta XR2 and let me have a blast down the A5, it was a car I lusted after at the time and from what I can remember it was a pretty good drive, very light and felt quite darty. Still hanker after one today but would agree they were fine for era.

I don't understand the value people see in old fast Fords.
It's all about nostalgia for people of my age (mid-late 50s). These were the cars teenagers and 20-somethings wanted but couldn't afford. Now they have a few quid in the bank and want to re-live their youth.

I had a Mk1 (111) RS Turbo Escort when I was young (the 'proper' white one). They are still fetching silly money if you can find a good one. I would love to have one again, just for nostalgia, but not for £50k plus.

The figures these cars are going for are mental. Problem is in 20 years time when 'my' generation are too old or dead, the values will plummet IMO. Look at the market for early 20th century veteran cars, now. They are worthless, generally, as the generation who loved them are gone and they are not relevant to the next generations.

They mentioned this on Bangers and Cash recently, the market for pre war cars especially has dropped as no one wants them as the generation who would normally be into them is dwindling and so not realising auction reserves.

A friend of mine had a series of Capri 2.8 injections when they were cheap as chips, probably in the early 2000s. I remember one in particular had cherry bomb exhausts that would shake buildings and set off car alarms at idle. It sounded epic at full chat and on the over run, but garnered a great deal of attention from plod as well as from some very dubious characters…

Looks like Escort prices are still on the rise as well.

130k anyone :o

Shame it's in white

I saw a car transporter with six brand new RS500s on the back, back in the day.

That lot must be worth a pretty penny now, although almost all of them were stolen / crashed / raced etc.

Utter madness for this junk!
For this money I’d have an M3 CSL, a 1M, Z4MC & MR and £150k left for some amazing holidays etc.

Never understood the draw of the M3. let alone the CSL. I'd take the fast ford every time. All of which are of course Taxi's anyway. Had myself a taxi too, when I needed one for hauling kids. Only humble a humble 170bhp Mondeo 24v SI. But to my knowledge it was the fastest car Ford made at that time. Between the end of the Cossies and the rebirth of the GT. Oh the days before speed cameras.

I don't think ANYONE who buys these cars is planning on driving them, ever. Maybe a cameo at the RS Owner's Club Xmas do once a year, delivered on a flatbed.

Bought either by a wealthy 'collector', or as a hopeful investment (especially the Escort Cossie with virtually delivery miles).

That's always the problem if you bought it you wouldn't enjoy it with the mileage and condition. Think I'd rather buy something new and get the full use out of it.
