Cost to have a fault code read?

Still got intermittent Dsc fault light triggering so need to see if its logged the issue , as the 1st port of call in getting it sorted out before mot early next month (it's fail now if it triggers during test)
Anyone know the likely figure an indy will charge to hook her up and see if it's logged anything? (uk)

Thanks in advance

depends on your indy ?
My fella never charges me anything 8)
If you hand the car over to be fixed in essence its actually a machine for their benefit not your's
its one of the reason's why i avoid main dealers if i do have a problem . The thought of paying extra for them to tell me what's wrong before they sort it seem's like some sort of confidence trick

I'd get yourself a reader off ebay, preferably a bluetooth one as you can then use it with apps such as Torque on your phone to read codes and also if you want, to see real time information such as live fuel economy.

You should be able to pick one up for less than you'd pay to have the codes read once. I got an EML327 one for about a tenner. Works a treat with my android phone and the basic version of Torque is free.

Current price from a BMW dealer is about £50 to run diagnostics.
Expect half that from the Indy, but of course it depends if you are just using them or it's part of the job of fixing the problem.

Readers are great if you get one that works properly and you understand what the output means and waht to do about it.

Cheers Guys, will investigate the cable and torque
High Lane (indy) in Aintree, Merseyside want £40 to read the codes!

We dont charge if we then fix the vehicle...

£20 if we are just reading the codes then you go elsewhere for the work.

My battery died over the winter. Wouldn't hold a charge after that but had to buy TIS software for laptop with cable to delete transporter mode twice in all. Paid £25 so quids in on Indy charges. Fitted new Bosch Battery in the end

Good to know for the guys near you :)

Shame i'm not closer myself (Lancashire)

£10 obd2 Bluetooth dongle from eBay and torque for android works well. I use it on all my cars now and it does a lot more then just read codes.

Www.BMTechic.com ....he's local to you in the UK.... He has a one click software that includes the cable for your vehicle.
Well worth looking up his website and paying what he's offering. He's a sponsor on the M3cutters forum...

Other than the fact I need it reading and sorting it asap, I would get the SW and read it myself, saving £40 in the process, (the other Indy in Southport want the same as the one in Aintree to read the errors) - But will purchase one soon so I can do it myself in future- does torque allow you to programme the user options on the z4, like bmw can?

If you're thinking of going to Aintree you may as well just head right into Liverpool and go to Autotech just off the Dock Road.

I've been there plenty of times in my E46 and they are great.

Thanks for that info, shame I only just read the reply before I close the post - had it done at Darren Wood in Stockport as they had great reviews on here, turned out it was a pressure sensor that had failed! - fixed now but will look into Autotech for future reference as Stockport is a bit far (some of the other ones near me get poor feedback on here)

Just an update so my thread is not left without a closing post:-

All sorted thanks to Darren wood in Stockport! - decent service, nice staff and very competent!
