Cost of spring replacement

Well I have a failed MOT for a broken spring (shocker!) I know this is a VERY common problem but couldn't find any costs. So what should I expect a BMW dealer to quote for one spring and labour and VAT of course?

About £175 all-in, depending on your region. I was quoted £320 for the pair in early '08 from a West Yorkshire dealer.
 
You could always try for a goodwill contribution, although that will depend on the age and service history of the car.

The springs themselves are £75, so you could maybe go to an indy and save £40ish, although for that little difference I wouldn't bother.
 
Thanks Andrew, thought about an Indy but then I'd lose the free retest that BMW said they would do which would mean me paying about the same. Oh well, I guess I can go without eating for a while!
 
Just buy the spring, if you can jack up the car and support it safely, take the wheel off undo 1 bolt you can change the spring in 15 mins max, it really isn't worth getting a stealer to do it.

The Government said:
If the vehicle is removed from the testing station for repair and returned for retest within 10 working days following the day of failure, then only a partial retest is needed and a partial retest fee is charged.

best to know the full ins and outs on MOT testing law ;)



Don't ever get fooled when they offer you a "free retest"... they have to do that by law!
It's also worth noting that if any of these items caused the failure:

Bonnet, Horn, Sharp Edges, Bootlid, Lamps, Steering Wheel, Brake Pedal Antislip, Loading Door, Tailboard, Direction Indicators, Mirrors, Tailgate, Doors, Rear Reflectors, VIN, Dropsides, Registration Plates, Windscreen and Glass, Fuel Filler Cap, Seat Belts, Wipers and Washers, Hazard Warning, Seats, Wheels and Tyres

then you're free to take the car away and get them fixed elsewhere, bring the car back before the end of the next working day, and get the retest done for free as well.

If it's not one of that list (or you cant fix it before the end of the next working day), you still can take it away, fix it, bring it back within 10 days, but then have to pay for a partial retest (half the normal cost).


hence I always try to get my MOT done on a friday, meaning I then have the whole weekend and most of monday to try and fix stuff if needed :D
 
Thanks SK, that's good to know as I might need to sort out the tyres as well. Shame on me for not knowing that before I told BMW to do the springs!

In their defense they didn't try to sell the free retest as a reason to do the work there, I asked if it would be a free retest and wrongly assumed if I took the car away that wouldn't apply.
